Epix 2 issues

My new Epix 2 overestimates the steps, sleep detection is untrue and out of phase, the minutes of intensity are something strange and incomprehensible. Fenix 6 pro is much more better. Do you think that they are software or hardware issues? I would turn it back. Thanks a lot

  • How do you know the steps are overestimated? Do you wear both watches at the same wrist?

Are your HR zones set the same as on the F6? How do you know the sleep detection is wrong? Have you set the same sleeping time in the epix?

  • Thank you for your answer. I have a Galaxy Watch 4 that is very accurate and an Epix 2. Galaxy watch is perfect in fitness detection while Epix 2 is too bugged

  • You were speaking about Fenix 6 Pro and Epix. Have you set everything the same on the Epix as on the Fenix?

  • Yes the settings are the same, but the steps in Epix 2 are totally wrong. As example: 1,2,5,6,8,12 then it stops and then it starts again counting steps 23,25,28,32 and so on... I was awake and it was tracking sleep. It tracks sleep and chages the hours. 10 hours, than 5 at the same day...it seems like gone mad. I have done 1 hour and half cardio activity and it wasn't displayed in minutes of intensity

  • Garmin has a great software package in regards to quantity, but their quality is crap.  Programming is not in house and is outsourced.  Instead of having a rock solid core, they opt for the consumer do it all, and that just doesn't work well.  The number of issues I have with the Epix 2 compared to the AW are incomprehensible.

My Epix 2 will soon go on Ebay, and it's only a month old.  I watch these forums in hopes that after a big release like this, I see old issues fixed.  Instead I see the usual Garmin.  Tons of new features, same old bugs.

Garmin was much better when they did their programming in house, but that costs money and they don't want to invest in such a thing when people buy the product regardless.

I'm hoping the Coros Vertix 3 is worthwhile to look at when it's released.  I tried a Coros a friend wanted to sell, but it was lacking internal music at the time.  He got an AW.

I think Samsung's Galaxy watch had high potential, but their new designs are HORRIBLE.  The mechanical bezel was the Sh*t.  I loved it.  Another issue is it only works with Samsung/Android

My BIGGEST gripe with my Epix 2 is the bluetooth performance.  It's simply horrid.  Cut outs, sensor cut outs, sound cut outs.  With some devices it seems to have great range, with my airpods I think the range is about a yard, it's horrid.   The more sensors you add the more issues.

    • Thank you for your contribution. You are right. I had Polar, Fitbit that were too limited in functionalities even if the quality of fitness tracking was high, while the sport features of Garmin are immense but the quality is disappointing. I thought that Epix 2 comparated to Fenix 6 was better but i got wrong. It isn't worth its price. I'm considering whether to keep it or return it becouse anyway it is nice, the display is fantastic and the sport tracking is complete. At the moment Epix 2 is unbeatable on paper but the software and the algorithm are too bugged and inefficient. Garmin neglects its products.
  • This step counting is normal. Had the same one the Fenix and all other Garmin watches. The watch has to guess what movement of your arm was a step done by your feet. If the algorithm is unsure, it waits if there are some more steps to follow. if yes, it adds the other ones. As on all devices on your arm, its not step counting. It's step guessing.

You can also see this if you use the watch to track your weight training. For each exercise the watch tries to find a matching pattern of your arm movement for your repeats and therefore it does not count continuously, but at the end most of the time its correct or very close.

My sleeping hours have never changed. They say the same as they were shown when I got up.

  • A couple of observations about the step counting on Epix 2

    - the # of steps on the face watch doesn't seem to be updated in real time. The glance is updated real time

    - the # of steps during a walk activity with GPS on is pretty accurate. I have been counting my steps and checking against the watch and it matches very well

    - the # of steps based on wrist movement is OK when walking and when the watch-bearing arm is moving naturally. It is off when the watch-bearing arm is carrying anything, holding the dog leash or keeping the hand in the pocket)

    - the daily # of steps is at best an approximation otherwise. Many non-"active" activities can generate phantom steps (driving, brush your teeth or cleaning with your watch-bearing hand, etc. I'd say the estimate can be completely off if you are sedentary.

I have no comparison with other watch. Just counting my steps for short streaks during my walks, or during movements in the house during the day.

So, unless you are actually organizing yourself to go on walks, and walk with the watch-bearing hand moving freely, the Epix is not reliable to count your steps.

  • Thank you for your remarks. I noticed that in the GC app there is no longer any intensity minute tracker in sports activities at the end of the workout
