v9.36 Official Software Fast Battery Drain

I'm going through the battery in 24-48 hours. No apps or fields installed. No GPS activities. Also having sync issues where I have to kill the connect app on Android to get it to sync. I had the same issues on beta now it persists into the production release

  • I don't use Strava at all and the drain is more than double compared to 8.37.

Most likely closing the GCM will also stop the Bluetooth traffic hence the draining is not there.

  • From yesterday the battery drain issue is resolved with strava segments unchecked and simultaneously restart watch and GC. BUT.. Today second run after update, I had an other annoying problem. Lap average pace was very very unstable and  wrong (auto lap 1km). The reason is that the watch recording wrong distance. Garmin recorded 20.7Km instead of 23.5km. The route map on the activity file have nothing wrong. I'm sure from other runs that this route is 23.5 and that is the distance calculated by strava after distance correction. Data recording setting is  "smart" as default, and satellites setting is "all systems"

Has anyone else tried to run after the update?

  • 3rd day that roll out update to 9.33  is 20% , maybe Garmin stopped rollout ? to check if they can fix the batterydrain so many seem to have ?

  • It’s the weekend.

  • Not tried to run. I’ve ran 3 times. No issues with distance compared to another updated F7 and someone’s Corus.

  • I think there are multiple factors at play here - some people are seeing 100& drain in about a day, others are experiencing 2-3x quicker drain than normal. So this could be down to multiple things, including Strava segments, CIQ apps, GCM changes which makes it very hard to pin down the issue(s) or come up with a workaround.

  • It would be interesting to know how many people experiencing problems are running iOS16 beta. That's definitely made changes to the way background syncing over Bluetooth works, as I have apps like SuperSapiens that won't background sync under it and I know their devs are struggling to resolve this. It could be that that's affecting battery life on the Epix, or it could be that Garmin have made changes to GCM to accommodate these changes that are now causing the issue.

Clearly this couldn't account for everyone's problems are there are people on here running GCM on Android (and I'd guess iOS15), but it may account for part of the problem.

  • Data recording setting is  "smart" as default, and satellites setting is "all systems"

On every Garmin device, the first thing that you should do is change the recording from "smart" to "every second".

This should not affect distance/pace/etc but you should do it to have, visually, a better track and graphs too.

  • Thanks

I never had any problem with these settings again, so I hadn't changed them, enable 3d distance and speed helps too?

  • How do you disable  Strava segments?

on the watch or on the garmin connect account?
