Epix as Bike Computer

So I used my Epix's as a bike computer today... mounted in place of my Edge... I had the screen scrolling set to medium... I am happy to say the screen didn't dim during the ride.

There are 2 couple of fields/functions that the Edge 830 has which are not on the Epix.

1. Lights - the Epix can control them but the fields - number connected, battery level and beam angle aren't available

2. Food and Drink reminders - not possible - I was starting to use this so won't miss this...

But overall I might stop using the Edge altogether.

I had it on MTB race yesterday and I could read screen when Epix mounted on my handlebar without touch screen or push any buttons. I can’t tell for sure if it dim a little bit. But as said no need to touch…

I was also impressed with the Stamina values. I was at 15% when I got home the last 4km are a climb after the flattish 40km. I think I was about done or at least needed to rest.

You can set up alerts for this purpose. I have a standard 20 minute alert to remind me to eat/drink.

There are a number of Connect IQ options out there that you can pull this information from, but I haven't found one that combines all the information you seek into one IQ field. A bit of an issue with the 2 IQ data field limit. I use the Light State field (https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d73b65b7-0200-4ad2-978c-e87f71ade055) just to keep track of my rear light/radar.

My first thought was, that he must have a defective device, because mine always dims and it is just not usable for me on the handlebars. Or it must have been a rough ride with a lot of vibrations on the handlebars, what prevents the display to dim.

Supplement: ah, I assume the automatically screen scrolling did the trick…

Setting During Activity Screen is always on, but I think you are right it was the scrolling that did the trick.

Yesterday's ride was 45km about 2.5 hours. It used about 10% (but I charged the watch Saturday night and the ride finished 14:00 Sunday so was 16+ hours after 100%)

Unfortunately, I really don’t like the automatically scrolling while I am using it on the handlebars. Ok, normally I use an Edge device on the handlebars…

I've been using my various Garmin watch-type devices for a while now as my bike computer also (I had one of those little Edge 25 units, but....blah). I like the Epix as a bike computer for sure and use it with my chest strap, my pedal/power meter and also the Garmin speed sensor mounted on the hub. All works great and yes I use the wrist function to get it to brighten up as needed. All good for me.

I am considering an Epix Pro as a Fenix owner but this would be a no go as I don't want automatic screen scrolling...
