Wrong heart rate monitor during training

First of all, I wear the watch correctly, neither too tight nor too loose. It cannot slip during training and is far enough away from the wrist ankle.
Training is the repeated ascent and descent of the same mountain.

Question: The relatively correct pulse is displayed up to the 18th minute. From then on, despite the same effort (same incline, relatively same speed), I received heart rate data in the 115 range for over 23 minutes, although the 160 range would be correct? This deviation is extreme and I can no longer do anything with this data!
From the 40th minute onwards, my heart rate is back in the realistic range.
How can this be with a 1,100€ fitness watch? Absolutely unacceptable (Garmin Epix 2; Sapphire Brown Titanium)

Following another Plot (Training) with similar problem.

Beforehand: Yes

  • I have the exact same issue (epix pro gen 2). I did a half marathon the other day and 15 minutes in my HR was still showing 121 when it should be in the 160 range. I had to pause the activity, turn it of and on again, and then resume the activity. This resolved it for around 45 minutes, and when I checked it again my HR was as low as 110 (after about 10KM of running!) When i updated to 17.23 it resolved the issue for around a week, but the problem is now back. Garmin support advise to warm up before starting the activity, but this doesn't help when the HR is dropping during the actual run. On other runs I have done, the HR seems to stop rising at around 138-142 when it should definitely be in the 160-170 range. is this being looked into??? This is not an inexpensive watch, and the problem is becoming very frustrating. My 5 year old apple watch is currently more accurate than this!

  • Hi, I do not want to use chest straps, I gave up years ago…
And this is a bug, not a problem of some random errors. It should be solved, as the hw and the sw is the same or similar to several Fenix’s, for instance. And my Epix HRM worked well at the beginning…

  • Be sure to contact support. They responded to me after I sent them an email.

  • Good to hear, thanks. I had very good experience with support before, I’ll try that if they do not come with a fix soon…

  • I totalky agree with you.

I also had this issue several times. I still had a garmin dual chest strap and now I am only doing runs with the chest strap. That solves the problem for me right now. But I can totally understand that no one is willing to spend another 100 bucks to garmin for a chest strap to make this expensive watch working.

But I think I have read some posts also about problems with chest strap. Might be that's an issue with the new combined redundant measurement from the optical and ecg sensor.

By the way, I don't use my Bluetooth earphones anymore since the audio guide is useless firme since 17.23 update. Some people stated that the HR issues stooped if not using Bluetooth earphones during activity.

  • I totally agree with that. If it's not working garmin should spent a free ecg sensor on their own cost or fix the problem.

I can't understand the life hacks from warming on, etc. it's just not working at least for some of us

  • Hi, I'm also having this issue. Is this a warranty claim? The watch is fairly useless with a fundamental feature not working.

  • same here, I wonder whether there is a correlation with temperature changes.

  • Take screenshots and write a short explanation. My watch has been exchanged (2 times already). First time because of the faulty HF, second time because of faulty GPS. Annoying for such an expensive watch, but at least it was exchanged. Each time I waited about 1 month for the new watch.

  • 1 month is a long wait. What a hassle.
