HRV High load - normal values?

Hi all,

I am really enjoying running with my Epix 2 and I try to follow the daily recommendations to slowly becoming faster and stronger. Before every training I do the HRV-test and very often it says "Very high HRV-load". Do you consider this normal out of my training history? And how do you interpret a high HRV-load; do you train more easy or just go for it what ever this value shows?

Thanks,

Johannes

  • Your chart shows that you train in the anaerobic zone only and this does not look right. Check your heart rate zones. I'd guess they are not set properly.

  • Thanks for your reply but I don't understand how you can see that when looking on my two pictures? Attached here are my different zones I have been focusing on:

    Thanks,

    Johannes

  • I have mixed up things. Your second picture looked to me like the "training load" screen and purple means anaerobic zone. Now I'm not longer sure which screen you are showing and I shut up.

  • The second graph is HRV stress not Exercise Load.

your training looks well balanced and in optimal load zone.

if you’re worried about these high HRV stress numbers, check your recovery advisor and in the new alpha release you can check more comprehensive training readiness scores which includes HRV data.

do you get high sleep scores? Does your body battery recover well overnight?

if it does, you’re alright. They wouldn’t recover if your body was highly stressed

You said you do the test before every training. When do you do it, first thing when you wake up or later in the day?

do you do it standing up, sitting or lying down?

These things will affect the reading.

if you’re concerned, you can use ie. HRV4Training to measure similar HRV based readiness each morning, but you’re better off installing the new firmware and using the training readiness metrics.

FYI, I’m pretty well recovered this morning, only having done light training yesterday after about 1.5h of moderate running the day before. My recovery advisor shows 19h, and my HRV stress test just showed 69.

  • Hi,

Thank you for your detailed and interesting answer.

Actually I tried to download the 9.14 alpha files on my PC but no update appeared on the watch so I did not dare to continue because I am not so technical :). Do you recommend to try again? I am really looking forward to the new features.

I have good sleep scores and body battery. I do the test at the same time i.e before I train as Garmin have recommended and I stand up which Garmin also says in the instructions.

I have a history of some heart issues back in 2007-2009 when I suffered from eight episodes of pericardit so I am very thankful for every statistic that can help me train better. I am fully recovered since way back but you know - our heart is an important muscle Slight smile

    Thanks again,

    Johannes

  • The new firmware introduces a number of features you'll find interesting for HRV status and training readiness which includes HRV based metrics, but has some quirks that you may find frustrating if you're not prepared to deal with some technical inconveniences.

I do the test at the same time i.e before I train as Garmin have recommended and I stand up which Garmin also says in the instructions.

You're better off doing it first thing in the morning, rather than just before the training to remove additional variables you can't control, if you want consistent measurements.

Look into HRV4Training (app for iphone and android) and perhaps ECG or AFib detection. Epix 2 doesn't do that, it seems it doesn't have the hardware for it. Apple watches do, and you could also use tech like Withings BPM Core, if you want something better than Apple Watch style ECG.

As to the garmin firmware, If you can, you're better off waiting until the beta version gets released and pushed automatically to beta program members (if you're enrolled). The installation process then will be much easier, and the feature set is likely to be further stabilised and  improved, so you will have less technology based frustrations.

  • Thanks again and I am now registered for the beta program, I think that will do good and I can wait for the new features some more time Slight smileI also bought HRV4training, seems like a nice complement to Garmin although I skip the Strava connection. Garmin will just fine for me Slight smile

    Kind regards,

    Johannes
