AOD Display Always Stops, Display Goes Blank, You Have to Reboot Watch

I've had this issue with my previous watch and new one.  After using the watch a lot for activities, music, etc.  The AOD stops and just works with wrist.  After I reboot the watch it is fine.  This is kind of annoying.

I'm finding I have to reboot the watch quite often to keep things working smooth.  It's not a defective watch, it's the software.

Absolutely NO apps/watch faces installed but stock, and I reset the watch after each update and reconfigure.

  • Can you quantify "a lot"? Just curious.

  • When you say "the AOD stops", you mean that the watchface screen goes black instead of to the dimmed version?

I don't have this issue, but from your use case I also don't use music (although I can't see why that would cause it).  Do you use a power mode in any of your activities that disables AOD for that activity?  I do use power modes with some activities, but I very rarely use the one I created that disables AOD -- my regular every day activities I use all leave the AOD on.  If you do regularly disable AOD for your activities I would guess there is a bug in the handling of that.

  • Hi Eric,

I keep power on normal (watch defaults) for everything and never disable the screen.  Yes, it goes to black instead of dim.  One other thing I do often is disable touch, and that may be what triggers the bug.  Also notice the battery estimate goes to what it would be if I disabled AOD.  I check the settings on the watch and AOD is enabled for both activities and normal use.

  • Interesting.  I only disable touch manually when I wear my watch in the shower, but I'll play around with doing that as I'm working at my desk today and see if I can trigger it.

Not to assume, you are on the 8.37 release right?

  • Is there any chance you're using a third party watch face? If that's not done well it might violate the screen burn in protection and cause the display to shut off...

I also disable touch a lot and do not have this problem.

  • This happened to me yesterday for the first time. Running 8.37. I often disable and enable touch (my toddler often presses the screen) but don’t use music. I’d just finished a run, was driving home and noticed a blank face. I never disable the screen so I thought the watch had died prematurely. Light button turned screen on for 8 seconds but then would go blank. Checked the settings which confirmed AOD should have been on. A restart fixed it.

  • Thank you for your posts to bring attention to the issue. I am sending you a Private Message to gather more information.

  • Please make sure you are not experiencing this different issue: AMOLED Glitch Issue with AOD and Gesture Feature

  • Is there any chance you're using a third party watch face?

I do not use any third party watch faces or apps.  No need.  Stock Garmin through and through Slight smile.  Only the music I load on the watch is not stock.

  • If anyone notices a pattern or can replicate when your Epix 2 display goes blank with the behavior described, please update this thread. Thank you!
