Strange AOD behavior only during workout

I have noticed that my screen is doing weird things only during a workout. It usually starts out going blank during an alert (last lap/HR/up next) and then comes back on. Then after a while it will just go to AOD off with gesture for the rest of the workout.  And this isn't every workout. It seems that if I power cycle the watch it resolves for the next workout but then goes back to the strange behavior.

Possibly unrelated but when I then gesture during alert, some alerts are either not persisting long enough or the gesture is delayed to turn the screen on, causing me to miss the alert.  It could be a function of having 2+ alerts happening at the same time also during vibration (last lap and up next, competing for screen time).

In regular activities, not a workout, the AOD is working properly.

Settings:

General Use: AOD off, medium brightness, alerts on, wrist gesture on, 8 second timeout

During Activity: AOD on, medium brightness, alerts on, wrist gesture on, 8 second timeout

Firmware: v8.21

I searched the other AOD issues and didn't see anything specific to workouts.

  • I am on 8.35 beta and I observe similar strange behaviors of alerts or similar temporary displays (like rep counts confirmation) with gesture on.

    - during running, with run/walk alerts. The alert comes up, I turn the writ to look at it, the display turns on, the alert is displayed. When I check later, same thing: wrist gesture, display turns on, same alert is still there. Sometimes, the alert goes away and the workout display comes back as it should. Hard to reproduce systematically.

    - during strength workout, perform some exercise, finish the reps, wrist gesture, display goes on, no reps are counted, but sometimes the rep confirmation screen picks up the number of reps anyway, and sometimes it doesn't. Same thing, hard to reproduce systematically.

  • I noticed similar AOD issues during my activity where the screen would shut off, but my AOD is turned on for activities so not sure if this is a bug or not. Just upgraded to 14.68 which was the only thing that changed.

  • There are 2 ways to set the display option for an activity.

    1) Default option under settings - menu - system - display - during activity.

    2) Power modes - if assigned power mode has a different display option that will override default and settings option. Menu - power manager - power modes. Edit or create new one. Then set power mode on activity (in activity settings).

Activity settings - menu - activities & apps - select activity - activity settings - Power mode is in this list
