AOD/Wrist gesture per activity?

I can't see how to do this on my Epix using global screen settings, power profiles and activity settings.

I'd like AOD and gestures per activity or via a power profile e.g. when hiking turn AOD off and gestures on, when doing a yoga class turn AOD on and gestures off.

Any idea how it can be done, if possible?

Thanks

  • Are you on 8.18 - cause if you are creating a power management profile with AOD off (or on) and then going in and assigning it to an activity now works. Can confirm as my watch updated overnight and this morning the power profile that I had with AOD off and had assigned to my Walk Activity did actually kick in today and when my arm wasn't raised the screen did turn off - any slight movement up did then wake up the screen. This is the only reason why I suspect I had received the update, so check post activity and am now on 8.18.

Note - have just checked and can see the power mode estimated times change i.e. normal says 16, my AOD says 22. I change to normal: normal says 16, AOD off says 16. But when i scroll and select it, and then go back into power modes again it now says 22 when I have selected it. So definitely possibly a bit of bug there in the display of estimated hours, but definitely possible to see what it estimates.

Side note to the AOD off during activity - when you hold it level the watch face will not initially turn off as I suspect it is keeping it awake as it assumes you are viewing the screen (makes sense). If you then tilt your wrist out (and or drop your arm) the screen will turn off. If you very, very slowly turn your wrist back in towards you it will remain off while you keep flat, until you raise or make a more vigorous arm movement.  Can't get palming watch face to turn screen off, which I wish it did during an activity (or had the option to do that - or maybe I am missing a setting - if so please let me know - my suunto 7 used to allow this - super useful when using maps and you want to save battery).

So from my perspective this feature is definitely working now.

Note: assign power mode for single time - select activity (options/menu) - select power mode. Change power mode. The next time you select this activity it will have reset the power mode to the activities & app setting.

To permanently assign that power mode (for every time you select that activity) - menu - activities & apps - select sport - select sport settings - select power mode and assign the power mode you want to set for this activity every time you use it.

I really really like how they have split this and makes a lot of sense, as we tend to pretty much always use the same power management profile, but maybe one day concerned for battery life you need to use a less power hungry profile but only need it for that run - its great to have a feature like that.

  • Thanks for the detailed reply.

It seems I'm on 8.21 and can set AOD to be off for a hiking power profile, to make it different from my normal setting when it is enabled,  but cannot see how to change the wrist gesture for a specific activity i.e. just disable it for yoga, but leave it enabled for hiking The fix would be for Garmin to allow a settings for wrist gesture in the power profiles as it does actually affect power usage.

  • All credit goes to

I'm quite sure what you're getting at, though. You can create as many power modes as you like and assign them to any activity. If your global setting is AOD on and you want Yoga to be gesture only, you can create a power mode with AOD off and assign it to Yoga as the default power mode in the activity settings. But, as I said, maybe we're talking past each other. Smiley

  • Sorry, I'm probably not being clear.

For hiking I want the AOD off and gesture on and the reverse for yoga - AOD on and gesture off.

I can see how to change AOD in the power profiles but not gesture, as the gesture setting seems to be a global setting for all activities.

If I enable AOD for yoga I have to use the global activities gesture setting for gesture, which lights up the watch in the dark classroom. If I turn gesture off globally in activities then it wont work when hiking.

  • I was trying to figure this out for exactly the same purpose. The feature is simply not there. What I ended up doing, albeit not the nicest solution, is as follows:

    1. Set Global Activity Wrist Gesture setting to off Disappointed

    2. Create new "Screen Off" Power Mode with Brightness reduced and AOD disabled

    3. Disable Touch for Yoga activity

It's not ideal but it gets the job done. I can turn the screen on during yoga with the Light button (it will turn back off at the timeout you set or you can do it manually pressing the Light button again).

As per the other activities having Wrist Gesture off is not a big deal for me because I use my Edge while cycling and even if I wanna look at the watch there's no much difference between turning the wrist and just touching the screen to make it brighter. Same for running. Plus it saves you some battery.

  • Ah... I think I'm starting to understand. Smiley

  • Thanks, that seems to be the only option for now. I'll raise a request for the  wrist gesture option to be added to power and activity profiles.

  • By default I have AOD off en gesture mode on. With kayaking the display is turned on with every move and draines the battery. I hoped I could solve this with your suggestion to make a new power profile. Unfortunately it is not possible to switch off gesture mode in a new profile.

Do you have a solution for that?

    - Normal: OAD off and gesture on, also during activities

    - Kayak activity: AOD off and gesture off.

  • There's no solution for that as of right now. The only option you have is to set the global Activity Wrist Gesture setting to off. You can configure Display Settings on a per activity basis by using custom Power Modes but not Wrist Gesture
