Distance accuracy?

Just got back from a short run. I’ve been using my iPhone to record my distance for a while now and I just started using the Epix 2 and where my phone said I traveled 1.12 miles (I’ve made this particular little run several times) my Epix said it was .74 miles. I chose to run them both just to see how close they would be but being a whole a qtr mile off is quite significant.

  • It is a huge difference indeed, but if you have a GPS-challenged area (tall buildings, tunnels, high voltage power lines, mobile network antennas, trees, etc....)

On the Epix, if the GPS signal gets weak, all systems and all systems multiband settings might help.

Otherwise, the best way to compare is with a known benchmark (running track, official 5K course, for example).

  • Is it possible that different units are used on the devices, because 0.74mi equals 1.19km.

  • Post your track as a link or activity or picture.

  • Without seeing the GPX files, I'd be inclined to believe that the Epix is the accurate one here.

Use this tool to upload both GPX files to have the on the same map so you can see which one lines up with the route you took. You will probably find that the phones GPS was all over the place making it register that you've run further. https://feub.net/gps-track-tools/compare-tracks/ I tested this with my old F6X and discovered that it was cutting corners etc meaning my runs were actually shorter than they should have been and my pace was slower than it should have been.

According to the OP, the relative difference is 1.12 / 0.74 -1 = 51%. Such a difference can't simply be explained by edge cutting.

Usually phones show more accurate distance due to larger antenna, more power and using WiFi positioning techniques.

BTW: I don't understand why you've downvoted my comment.

  • Odd. My wife has an apple watch 7, I have the Epix 2. When we go for walks/hikes together, they register virtually the same, just a few meters off after seven km. I generally use All Systems gps rather than just gps.
