Feature Request- sensitivity adjustment for AOD-off wrist gesture

I find that the wrist gesture to illuminate the display when the always on display is set to off is too sensitive. Can we get settings to change the behavior of when the wrist gesture illuminates the display? Something like low-medium-high would be nice. And the ability to set it for for specific activities. I’d like it to have a lower sensitivity for running, etc so the display isn’t always turning on when it shouldn’t be.

  • That’s interesting — you must move your arms differently when running than I do because I have the opposite.  Sometimes I have to turn my wrist twice to get it to detect the wrist gesture.  So, I’d support your suggestion but I would choose a higher sensitivity when running!  Anyway, you can make the suggestion to Garmin at this link:

  • Thanks for the link, will do! I ran my first run today (50k trail) with the Epix and loved the display! However I made a point to look down at the watch throughout the run to see if the display was lit up without moving my wrist, and it was. Perhaps due to the uneven terrain? Anyway it would be cool if we could set the threshold for when it turns on.

  • when in activity mode it seems to work off arm height and how turned in the wrist is.

  • Personaly, I'd also like the option to turn off the "off" wrist gesture. I want it to turn on with the wrist movement but I definitely do not want it to turn off. It's frustrating to have it constantly turn off when I need to see it. So, maybe a setting for on and a setting for off?

  • i would like to have this feature too.  when i'm running, i often notice the display is already on just by swinging my arm.  even if i try to keep the watch vertical, i notice the display turns on.  it should only turn on when only when intentionally turn my wrist so that the watch is horizontal, but it is too sensitive.  i would love this feature with the right sensitivity.

  • Agree. My old fenix 5 had just the right gesture sensitivity. I had to do a subtle exaggerated motion to get it to turn on, but the positive trade off was that it never came on unintentionally and thus saved battery power. Now my new 7 just wastes battery power because it’s so sensitive and turns on the backlight with the least motion, not even close to looking at the watch.

  • With the 10.x firmware updates, Garmin seems to have turned down the AOD-on wrist gesture sensitivity. Before, it was perfect for me. Now, it's not sensitive enough. I would rather the screen sometimes turn on accidentally due to run/ski arm motion than have to lift my arm three times before it will go on (especially during a race, as happened a couple of days ago--just wanted to see my HR and it was frustrating to not see it when I wanted---major distraction too, which is not good when zipping down a hill on skis). Battery life is not a concern for me--it's excellent. So a few extra minutes of screen-on time during a 2h activity does not bother me, but having to swing my arm repeatedly to see the screen does.

I will also note that I recently got a warranty replacement for a button issue, and both the old Epix 2 and the new one have the same sensitivity issues, so it must be software.

I don't know if the new 11.25 firmware fixes this, but it seems that firmware rollout is paused due to sensor issues for the moment. I am still on 10.46.

It seems clear that adding a simple sensitivity option (I favor a low/med/high) for the wrist gesture would be helpful, and probably not hard for Garmin to do.

  • I also find that after 10.x firmware sensitivity is way too low. I need constantly turn my wrist multiple times to get the screen on. Before 10.x I never had any problems with the gesture.

  • was an issue that they are aware of and has been raised. If you find the link you can add yourself to Chris mailing list re this issue.

  • Thanks. Is that a thread in this forum?
