Spotify - Control your smartphone using the watch app

I assume you are using the Spotify app on the watch.  This is for downloading Spotify playlists directly to the watch and playing music from there.  This is why it is asking you to connect your headphones.

What you want to do is change the music provider to "Control Phone".  The watch will then work the way you want.

You're making it more complicated than you need to. What you want to do is set the Music Control 'glance', or widget, to - "Control Phone". That setting allows your watch to play/pause/vol up down, etc - all those functions apply to WHATEVER is playing on your phone. So - make sure your headphones are connected to your PHONE, as you want them to be. Then, start up whichever media app on your phone you want to use (in your case it's Spotify but that's not relevant to this process - whatever your phone is playing can be controlled by the watch, AS LONG AS you have 'control phone' set in the Music widget on the watch. Start with all that and let's see how it goes.

Thanks. I think that there is some bug. Only after uninstalling the Spotify app on the watch I have managed to see the phone control option

To change music provider (whether control phone, your own music loaded onto the watch and or a subscription service provider like spotify/amazon etc) - long press music hotkey (this is left bottom button - long press it). Music control screen will come up. Long press menu button (left middle). You should now have 3 options - music providers / headphones /Audio. Press on Music providers. Change to My Music (music loaded onto watch), Provider (should list any you have installed the app for i.e. spotify/amazon etc) or Control Phone. If you want to control Spotify playing on your phone, then use Control Phone option. Note that the media controller app is fairly limited to next, pause/play, and if you press the menu button (left middle) you can also get back and volume control.

My Music / Subscription services options are a bit more extensive with the ability to change playlist.
