Epix 2 bug: Steps counted while cycling (but the solution is simple)

I've just started using my new Epix 2 Sapphire and I'm really impressed so far! However, it seems that steps are being counted while I ride my bike (the bike trips are correctly detected as Move IQ events), which leads to completely inaccurate step counts for the day.

Counting steps while bike riding makes absolutely no sense, but the solution is thankfully very simple: When bike Move IQ events events are detected, please stop the steps counting to give the user a much correct steps count. Really hope you can implement this solution!

Thanks,

  • I really don't know why watches at this level have Move IQ or why any Garmin has Move IQ - it does nothing for you other than make things confusing - it basically just puts a calendar event. Nothing else. Switch it off and forget about it. https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=zgFpy8MShkArqAxCug5wC6

Now what is more useful, but not on their higher models (which sort of makes sense) is garmin's auto-start feature. Basically can set the time and if you have continuous activity for that period of time the watch will start tracking an activity based on the type of movement: https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=vV8trfTjiF9f3X9ninHZR8

The only do this for the Viv/Venu product range - which sort of makes sense as with other models you want to make sure your start and end points are very specific/correct. And you don't necessarily want the recording to stop if you are still for long enough to trigger the auto activity to be stopped.

But I personally think Move IQ should be replaced with auto-start on all watches, as there just isn't any point to it. So switch it off, or if you keep it on ignore any of these, as while they look like a double count, they aren't its just a calendar entry nothing else.

  • I definitely agree that auto-start would be the proper way to go about it! Seems strange they at least don't add an option for this on the higher-end devices as this would be equally as useful here. I used Fitbit in the past, and as I recall it, they did this perfectly fine and actually gave a great overview of your actual activities.

However, in its current state, the least they could do is disable step counting when those Move IQ events are captured, as those step counts are completely off when you decide to take a ride on your bike.

  • totally agree with the other statements about the uslessness of MoveIQ - just start an activity (Bike, in this case) and avoid all the messiness that comes with MoveIQ. You won't have any steps recorded and all the things you DO need wilil be properly gathered and recorded for you. Just turn off MoveIQ completely, yep.
