Custom Watch Faces Showing Error

Hi There - I am very frustrated. Whenever I restart my watch, my custom (downloaded) watch faces shows. Within a short period of time it disappears and when going to "Watch Faces" on the watch, I only se "IQ!" (the letters IQ with a small triangle and an exclamation mark in it). I can again restart the watch, watch faces comes back but soon - my watch active face disappears and default watch face shows. Anyone else experiencing this?

  • i have also problems with 3rd party face watches , since i updated to 8.18, but it seems only the 3rd party faces and some glances not work correct anymore, when i was a day ago still on 7,35 all worked well, i have contacted all of the 3rd party dev's and asked them to review their app's, now hope they get fixed :(

  • I noticed just yet that ALL 3rd party watch faces give problems on 8.18, when going to glance overview up or down all the 3rd party glances are sluggish and not update fast, most even stay empty as in no data and just the icon shows, when going to a stock watch face all works well, seems to me Garmin broke 3rd party apps when used with a 3rd party watch face. I asked this question also a few times : IS THERE A POSSIBILITY TO GO BACK TO 7.35 as then all was working great ???

  • The issue with glances on 8.18 is a known issue we're working to get fixed, but I am curious to see whether anyone else has noticed issues with Connect IQ watch faces on 8.18.

  • One of the dev's i reported isues with has the same isues mentioned here on his fenix7 on 8.18, and only when he have 3rd party watch faces on also, he wrote me in a mail all his 3rd party glances did not work corectly also or very slugish, when you swipe to right to go back to watch face the screen freezes also often and goes back to watch face when i use gesture mode down and up again. also animations from and to glances go more sluggish then normal, revert back to stock watch face and all is well. But that would defeat the existence of the iq store :(

  • I haven't been having any issues with my personal CIQ WF's, which I run 24/7.  One thing I did notice, was a pretty major change from before 8.18, is that your current WF doesn't get unloaded unless you select a different WF.  In the past, it would get unloaded and reloaded every time it became visible, even doing something as simple as a screen shot or scrolling down to the widgets.  Now it just gets hidden and then re-shown.  This is a major change that most devs probably haven't prepared for, but does fit with the specifications.  So I'm guessing a lot of WF dev's are going to have to make adjustments to deal with this.

I noticed this behavior on both my Epix and my wife's F7.

Wonder if there could be any impact of having multiple CIQ WF's, or if it's just one offender that is causing CIQ to get in to a messed up state impacting the other WF's.

Knowing what WF's are causing this would help Garmin narrow it down.

  • I must admit - since my Epix Gen 2 got updated to 8.18  a few days ago - I have not yet again seen a 3rd party watch face crash! Holding thumbs it is now sorted!

  • Well it does not chrash again anymore after restart, and reloading/downloading some 3rd party watch faces, but what still happens is that the glances off 3rd parties still not work correct and in best case need 1 to 2 seconds to refresh and then show the data next to the icon in glance overview, at work i have a colegue that have an Epix gen 2 also since 1 week, and he also noticed this on his watch, with stock faces all good, but any 3rd party watch face the glances are sluggish and take 1 to a few seconds to show info.

  • We've done some testing ourselves with 8.18 firmware to check for any issues using watch faces, and while the glance issue persists (and is a known issue), we didn't see any watch faces misbehaving. This jives with the latest comments on this thread, so I think whatever watch face shenanigans were happening in 7.35 have been addressed.

  • Can confirm, I am also on latest public and all my custom watchfaces and 3rd party are working.

  • Just an update since this issue has come back and i cant find the forum where they are trouble shooting it but i hope this helps someone.

I have a new EPIX Gen2 watch and i have firmware v16.22 w/ an Iphone 11 & Windows 10 desktop. To fix the issue i just reset my entire watch and setup through Garmin Express before any Connect IQ content was downloaded to my phone or my watch.

For contex, I was setting watch up and had a lot of unwanted watchfaces/datafields/apps and as i started deleting unwanted items, everything failed at the same. Through a long troubleshooting process i was unable to fix the issue any other way.

What was key in my reset process:

    - watch was plugging it into the computer to setup and update, i did this because the watch wasn't pairing with app with bluetooth but i think the "must update watch before apps/watchfaces can be work properly"  issue is behind the watchface issue. Really the warning should be in the setup of the watch, require the garmin express update/setup before the user has a chance to connect it to the IQ app. If i had connected to the IQ App before Garmin Express during this process it fails.

-when uninstalling watchface it is 'logged' and you can reinsall from list below, i believe this is adding to the issue. To finally fix my watch I had to uninstall all watch faces that meant deleting the "uninstalled" watch faces from the list. This must be done in both the IQ App and in Garmin Express as it is saved in both.
