Activity does not show up in Garmin Connect although calories, steps, etc. recorded

Hey guys,

I am observing weird behaviour of my watch. I have recorded an activity yesterday with my HRM Pro chest strap (without wearing the watch) and synced the watch with the strap afterwards. The activity (climbing) took around 3 hours and after syncing it showed unrealistic data for exercise load (10) and training effect.

After syncing with Garmin Connect, phone and watch, however, are showing the correct step, calorie, intensity minutes and even heart rate data in the daily chart are correct. However, the activity is not synced to Garmin Connect and does neither show in the app nor web app.

I tried to import the fit file manually to Garmin Connect, didn't work. Says "We don't support the file type you tried to import.". Other fit files do work.

I am guessing that something is wrong with the fit file and already tried different methods suggested here in the forum, couldn't make it work.

I would be very pleased if someone could help me. I have attached both the activity fit file and the heart rate data from the strap.

Kind regards,

  • Hi man! Many, many thanks for your urgent help, highly appreciated.

In theory, following your steps, everything should work flawless. But somehow, it did not. Let me explain and show you what I did and what I am seeing.

I deleted my activity fit file and tmyhr data from HRM pro from the watch and also directly in Garmin Connect (web app and mobile). Next, I transferred your file to the Activity folder on the watch and took a look at the activity (and already saw HR data without syncing to the strap ...).

Then, I synced my strap with the watch (in close proximity) by downloading the HR data from the strap. Surprisingly, the HR data before syncing watch and strap and AFTER syncing watch and strap look exactly the same ... which seemed very strange to me because I did not wear the watch during training, i.e. why does it show HR data even before syncing? (probable solution below) and why do the data not change with syncing?! Never happened before.

Next, I repeated the whole deletion process and tried to upload YOUR fit file directly to Garmin Connect web app just to see what's happening there. And, unsurprisingly, the upload worked (unlike yesterday with my fit file AFTER syncing HRM and watch). Hence, I also reckon that the HRM data must be flawed, because I did not get the same error message when directly importing your activity fit file as I did yesterday using mine after the sync.

Here, have a look at the following picture. This is the activity (YOUR fit file) without syncing HRM data. As you can see, strangely, some time points show heart rate data although the watch was in the locker. My theory is that these are times where I was close enough to the watch for it to get connected to the strap (Especially at the start and at the end of the workout and I think I walked to the locker twice to get a drink).

And these are other data from the activity:

The "funny" thing is that these data do not change after syncing HRM and watch, how could that be?

And even more surprising, if you look at my daily timeline of heart rate, steps, intensity minutes the data seem correct as you can see here:

    Heart rate

    Steps

    Intensity minutes

And even the calories for yesterday show something plausible although the activity itself does not. Besides the activity I probably had around 200 active cals, so the activity should show something in the ballpark of 1250 cals (~1000 active + ~250 resting) and not 384

Long story short, unfortunately, your solution did not work thus far. Can you imagine why? Should I try sth different?

I mean, the correct data HAVE to be there otherwise steps, intensity mins, cals and even the heart rate itself could not be correct as they are.

The only thing driving me nuts is that the activity data are not correct, I really want it to show the correct training effect and load for my training planning.

Thanks again for your help, highly appreciated.

  • I tried again to upload the fit files directly to Garmin Connect Web App and it really seems that the hr data from the strap are the dealbreaker.

    - uploading your fit file to Garmin Connect works

    - Then, put your fit file in the activity folder and synced the watch with strap, creates hrdata.fit in the temp folder => not possible to upload these hrdata.fit directly to Garmin Connect ("We don't support the file type you tried to import.")

Hence, I assume that the hrdata.fit is corrupted (tried to re-sync a couple of times, did not change anything) and cannot be synced to the activity (Although the watch tells me HR data download successful), but still contains the correct HR data, steps, whatnot. Could it be that the corrupted entries in the hrdata.fit file prevents it from syncing to the activity but still makes it possible for the data to show up in my daily summary?

Could you uncorrupt this file and merge it to your fit file (the one without hrdata) such that I can directly upload the "correct" fit file to Garmin Connect? If that is possible though

    Would be awesome.

  • Hey man, I had some work related issues which drained my energy away from solving my issue with the watch.

Unfortunately, the issue is still unsolved. I really do not understand why ... I tried all the different data that you have prepared but I do not seem to be able to get the activity to show the correct heart rate data and the correct training effect and load.

I thought that the issue might solve itself after creating another activity and then sync the Wednesday activity again, but I just came back from a run with my HRM Pro chest strap and there were no issues with syncing the hr data from the strap to my watch and then to Garmin Connect. Afterwards, I again used your stripped fit file (without HR data) and synced with the strap, still the same problem.

So, what's the deal with the data from Wednesday?

Maybe it has something to do with my movement pattern? I locked the watch into a locker, only wearing the HR strap and after roughly 1hr 5 mins I returned to the locker to take a sip from a shake, that's when I see a heart rate in the corrupted data, maybe because the watch was close enough to the HR strap and recorded some HR data on the watch directly.

    So, two questions remain.

    1) Maybe you are able to get the correct HR/training effect/load data when you put the fit file with the uncorrupted HR data onto your own watch or to Garmin Connect? If so, what are the steps that you undertook?

    2) The problem has to have a solution because steps, calories and even the heart rate for the 3hrs of bouldering are correct in my daily summary of Wednesday (as written below), but not in the activity itself. How is that even possible? I am really confused.

Thanks again and sorry for the delayed reply, sometimes work just interferes.

  • Hey man! Thanks again for you help. Unfortunately, your data do not fix the problem (I still had them on my PC and trief different methods several times, but couldn't fix the problem).

    regarding 1)

    - ah alright

    - I will message the Garmin Support and will give you a heads up what they have replied and if they could solve the problem

    re 2)

    - yes, it is connected

    re tip)

    - the actvity bouldering always is watch separated as I do not boulder with the watch on my wrist, it's in the locker room or at home, hence, I synced watch and strap after getting the watch back on, but yeah, you have helped a lot in understanding the problem

Hopefully, Garmin support can somehow fix it!

    Best,

    Alex

  • hi, did you resolved the issue? I have similar problem atm :( everything is updated (activity minutes etc), but activity is not showing on garmin connect. I have to manually import activities to garmin connect which is ...

  • Do you have the activities in your Garmin folder on your pc? You can cool at my post from yesterday and mine also doesn’t sync. Everything got synced but not the workout. I went to my PC to go to the activity file but there is no fit file for this specifically hike which doesn’t sync to connect

  • Yes, I have them, and I can manually import them. Syncing works with garmin express, but not via garmin connect. Maybe something with app permissions on the phone (which should not have any impact on syncing activities). Strange bug, pilates is syncing fine. Running and windsurfing is missing everytime now (it used to work :))
