Epix 2 bike activity elevation "optimistic"

I've had my Epix for about 2 months now and have been using it for the Stamina functions in addition to my Edge 1030.  The Edge historically has had altitude similar to both Strava mapping and friends with other computers on the same rides.  When I started using the Epix for bike activities, I noticed that the elevation gain always seemed higher by 5-10%.  I checked settings and the altimeter auto calibration is on.  Two possibilities:

 - the altimeter / GPS is off and needs to be calibrated or firmware updated

 - The Epix actually has more sensitive altimeter /GPS than the Edge

Thoughts?  Ways to possibly adjust the Epix?

  • Under "sensor and accessories > altimeter > sensor mode" choose "altimeter only". This is the mode recommended for activities with a lot of elevation changes. When set to "auto", the watch is supposed to choose the right setting based on GPS movement information.

  • Under "sensor and accessories > altimeter > sensor mode" choose "altimeter only". This will prevent changes in weather to influence your altitude readings.

This will increase the elevation gain even more since all changes in pressure will be considered as changes in altitude.

  • Actually this is not correct. While in an activity, the watch automatically changes in altimeter mode once it detects that some altitude thresholds have changed (when the auto mode is selected).

Being in the "Altimeter only" mode while in an activity, will not register more elevation gain. Of course any pressure changes, will be registered either as altitude gain/loss depending whether the pressure went down or up.

  • I was out in my kayak yesterday, on Montreal's Olympic Rowing Basin (so decidely F-L-A-T!)...I was wearing my Fenix 5 on one wrist and Epix on the other, to compare metrics in order to decide whether to return the Epix...after the 4x 2km workout the Epix claimed 17m of altitude deviation which is absurd. There is a boat ramp that's maybe 1m above the water and I walk it twice, but 17m? Nonsense. Fenix showed about half that which is a bit more within a tolerable margin of error I guess (but not really). Sometimes I wonder if all these new Super-Metrics are not just smoke and mirrors made up to sell watches?

  • Actually this is not correct.

Did you try using altimeter only several times in various conditions on a known route to compare?

Of course any pressure changes, will be registered either as altitude gain/loss

Isn't this against what you said, that it doesn't increase elevation gain? There may be a chance that it only increase elevation loss my my experience (after testing several times) is that you will gain more elevation as well.

  • I will put it in another way

The watch being in Altimeter mode (either by using Auto or Altimeter only), is affected by air pressure changes and this is normal. These changes, depending on whether they are increases or decreases in pressure, will be registered as elevation gain or loss. The watch has no way to differentiate between you actually going up/down or the if the pressure changed.

    Hope it is clearer
