Issue with power/cadence data recording (Rotor Inspider)

I did several rides with my Epix 2 and in parallel a bike computer.

The Epix is not recording correctly the power/cadence data from my Rotor Inspider. It seems to constantly loose the connection to the power sensor although the bike computer is recording correctly.

Here is an extract of this ride, recording from the Epix 2:

And the same extract, recorded on the Hammerhead Karoo 2:

  • BTW I also have an indoor bike equipped with another power meter, and the Epix 2 is recording it correctly.

So the issue appears to be limited to the Rotor Inspider.

  • I did more testing: I tried both ANT+ and Bluetooth connection of the Rotor Inspider to the EPIX 2 with unfortunately the same result i.e. the connection to the Rotor Inspider keeps dropping on regular interval. Totally unreliable.

At the same time I had also the Rotor Inspider connected (exclusively with ANT+) to a Wahoo Bolt V2... no issue there. The recording is continuous. Looks like an Epix issue to me. I opened a call to Garmin.

  • I've had no problems with either my Vector 3 pedals or the SRAM Rival/Quark power meter, so I'd agree that it is limited to your Inspider.  Out of curiosity, is there some way you could do a ride with your Epix closer to the power meter (putting it on your top tube or something) to see if maybe it is a signal power issue?

  • Good idea, I'll give it a try. Thanks!

  • Looks like it was indeed a distance issue. Moving the watch close to the sensor, no issue (continuous recording). I then decided to move the watch from my left wrist to my right wrist to have a more direct line of sight between the watch and the sensor... and bingo it works.

Now interestingly, last year I had a surgery and got a full left hip replacement, that's a nice piece of titanium in my left leg which could be in the path of the signal between the sensor and the watch if the latest is on my left wrist.  That could have been the source of the issue.

  • I have the same issue with a 4iii Precision 3 power crank. The connection is terribly unreliable to my watch but no issues with signal to my smart phone. I have tried it right next to the crank and it’s the same so doesn’t appear to be proximity.

I think I’m going to need to return it. Considering maybe the Garmin pedals instead. They’re more expensive but at least they are both Garmin.
