Not Possible to have some Activity with Always on and some activity don't have Always on (Epix 2)

For long activities like Trail running where I don't look at my watch that often, or when I open water swim, I don't really check my watch that often so I have put my "Always on" default activity settings as off.  But then I for my Run activity where I check my watch quickly, "Always on" guesture mode comes on too slow so I want it as always on, but I cannot do it, it only has the option as Same as default or Off.  Then I tried changing my default as Always On then check my battery mode on Trail running or open swim and Gesture to be Always Off, it does not work and keep Always on!?  what should I to do?

  • This is what the power modes are for but also shows its current limitations. In this case you need to chose to select AOD = On during activities as standard setting. Then create a custom power mode with AOD = off and link it to your Long activities in which you don't want AOD to be on. It currently cannot be done the other way around as power modes only allow two option: don't change or AOD off, there is no option for AOD on.  Hope this helps.

  • Hi Rene I have already tried that but it did not work unfortunately.  When h turn AOD on and in power mode I made up a special mode to turn off the AOD, when I apply that in the activity and start the activity it is still AOD on.

  • It's a known issue, we've raised a support ticket with Garmin on it.

It's actually even worse in that if you have AOD as off as your default, and then create a power mode with AOD also off, once you start an activity (with the AOD off power mode assigned to it) the watch will default into AOD on during the activity!  My use case was skiing where I'm out all day recording my activity whilst the watch is under my jacket nicely running AOD and burning through battery....

It might be worth raising another support request just to see if Garmin give you a lead time on resolution, but they are aware of the issue.

  • Just an update with the recent update, Now you can Turn on "Always on" for all activities and then individually turn off the always on for a particular activity by setting up a new power mode.  but once I have turn on the "always on" for all activity, the battery power prediction drops significantly and even for that activity I turn OFF always on with that new power mode, the battery predication is still very low.  If I turn off Always on for all activity, the power prediction is back up really high but I still cannot turn off always on individually within the activity.

    Hope thats its clear

  • sorry no - not clear at all.

I am clear about: Per 8.18 power modes now working in activities. So I understand that if I have always on set as default, but when doing an activity I set a power mode that has AOD off - that should now be reflected and actually work (previously it has reflected it but never worked).

Are you saying this doesn't work?

Or are you just saying that the estimated battery drain isn't reflected? If this I can sort of understand - though it may be a bug fix. For some items where the battery save/increase is variable - they don't provide an adjusted estimated time - they stick with the average. An example of this is music - because they don't know how much you can save. HR is different as it probably draws a specific amount per hour based on activity - so very definable. I can see how the screen time may be variable depending on how often you check and wake it up.

  • Let me give you an example, I have a power mode that is when it’s on gesture mode it is 35 hours in RUN and the general activity setting is Gesture mode.  Now I change the general activity to Always on, then RUN for the same setting turns into 25hr.  Then I now change RUN power mode to always on OFF, the power mode is should go up to 35hr right? but it remains at 25hr.

on the other hand if I use all activity gesture mode, and I change RUN activity to Always on, this just does not work.

  • I upgraded to 8.18 today and was trying to toggle off the AOD during individual activities, but it still does not work. Here is what I did:

    1. I set AOD as "Off" in General Use, but "On" in During Activities.

    2. I changed the AOD to "Disable" in the "Extended" power mode profile.

    3. I assign the "Extended" power mode to Walk.

    4. I started a Walk activity.

In Walk activity, I still see that my current Power Mode is "Extended". But I still have AOD on. It's just the brightness dims after a few second. But the AMOLED is always on. Am I doing something wrong?

BTW, I revised and assigned "Extended" power mode to Walk, because I cannot assign any new power mode that I created to those activities. Every time I assign a newly created mode to an activity, it reverses back to "Normal". But this is a separate issue I guess...

  • I have observed the same issue. When AOD is enabled for all activities, assigning a power profile that disables AOD to an activity type actually doesn't disable AOD for that activity.

Maybe you can still file a report in the 8.18 beta program (I didn't check today), or contact Garmin Support so that they create a ticket for this bug.

Note: with regards to your other observation about the power profiles not sticking, it looks like there are 2 different settings (for the purpose of this discussion, let's talk only about "run"):

    - the default power mode for the "run" activity type is assigned from the main menu, activities & apps > Run >Run settings > power mode > default mode

    - the power mode chosen after "Run" is selected from start button, then settings menu into "Power Mode" is just for that run, and will not stick if you stop this run and start another one

  • Yes that ultimately was my update on this update, but the problem is with this is the battery length prediction is wrong.  if General AOD is off, lets say the battery prediction for the activity is 35 hours, but when you change general AOD on, that activity battery prediction will go down to 25hr. Now if keeping general AOD on but change that activity power mode to off, the batter prediction is STILL ONLY 25hr!!?? the screen does turn off on gesture so theoretically the battery prediction should be back up to 35 hours since it is on gesture mode AOD off.  do you see my problem?  For my trail run activities I need long battery life and can do gesture mode, but for my run activities where I do intervals and gesture mode does turn on not quick enough so I want AOD on and can accept less efficient battery life.
