Manual course upload with .tcx file

Hi,

I've purchased Epix Gen 2 recently and found that this watch doesn't support .TCX file when I tried manually uploading the file into /garmin/newfiles directory.

I've been using this feature since I bought Garmin Edge 500 10 years ago and this feature is the most important feature I need for long distance cycling over 300 miles.

I'd like to know Garmin has a future plan to update it with firmware.

Thanks.

  • In my opinion the best way to manage courses is through Garmin Connect, you have the option to import both .gpx and .tcx. Once the course is created just sync it to the device, no need to physically connect the watch to the computer. Garmin Connect Mobile will do the sync.

  • Thanks, TobiasLj.

Garmin Connect doesn't accept waypoints that I created for .TCX file through third party apps as course points on the 'Up Ahead' screen, so I had to make all over again in Garmin Connect. I don't think it's reasonable way to use this $1,000 device. Furthermore, Garmin sells various devices in South Korea but Garmin Connect doesn't show proper map to make long distance plan in South Korea. (Unfortunately, Google router is not supported in South Korea due to military security issue here.)

  • I don't have an Epix (yet) but for older watches (Fenix 3 and 5 Plus) the turn-by-turn alerts were always lost then a .gpx or .tcx file was copied directly to the watch. Garmin Connect ignores the alerts in the files and creates new ones.

The only way to use self defined alerts was to use the .fit file format and either copy the file to the watch with a PC or to use the CIQ-app GImporter.
I use the Android app Locus Map to create courses with own alerts. This app can export courses in the .fit format.

Maybe this information might be helpful also for the EPIX2 or Fenix 7.

  • Thanks, RunR.

I'm a big fan of LocusMap, but I didn't know there was a function to export to FIT. I'll try it.

Meanwhile, I stayed up for 3 nights to find a solution and found a program that could convert and send .TCX to .FIT with no issues.

I've tried most converters available on the internet, but this is the only one that works with my Epix.
