Why are map downloads so absurdly slow?

I have been downloading maps for europe for the last 3 days including 1 day overnight. Why is this process so terrible? I have 10 gigabit fiber at home. Is there any way to cache the maps? Particularly with the Europe region I find myself constantly changing them.

Also why do I have to delete europe central to install europe west (or europe all) wouldn't having smaller regions make life much much easier and avoid forcing people to download 11gb at once.

A tip from Garmin Support was to uninstall and reinstall Garmin Express in this case. This tool seems to get stuck from time to time.

It took me about an hour to download the European maps (I am located in Germany). Maybe a temporary server issue at Garmin?

I download the topo maps (europe) with 100MB/s (I have 1 gig down so theoretically 125/s) with Garmin Express. When it says 50% in the app, it starts to push the file to my Fenix 7x at about 20MB/s (it's on a usb 3.0 port, but seems the watch is 2.0 protocol, based on that speed)

Ofcourse if Garmin it's server is uploading slow, you just get that speed...

In the end Garmin Express told me it would take about 2h30min, but was done under 15min or so :) (didn't time it...)

IMO for newly released maps like Garmin Outdoor Maps+, as I approach the busy Internet time of day (weekday when people get off work), I shouldn't expect their server farm to have much bandwidth left since I'm contending with other Garmin users doing simultaneous downloads. While the Outdoor Maps+ is a pricey $50/year, if it gets enough demand and their Internet/Ethernet server ports get bogged down they will likely purchase more bandwidth from their network provider to reduce the bottleneck.
