What's the point of the "bike commute" activity, when that does not reflect in the app or on the web, it just shows as bicycling?

Maybe its just so you can set up different screens more suited to commuting compared to racing/training etc?
Ahh, if only it was like that. All the pro's changing the profile to commute, just to get an edge over the non Garmin users.

Doesn't it set the 'Event Type' to Transportation?
Nope. ”Uncategorized” (but in swedish, maybe thats the issue?)
edit: and why do i not see this comment if I log out?

I suspect it will also have a different calorie met value, lower than normal biking ones
Why should it?
i commuted by bike yesterday and today. I don’t think pushing 200W is easier only because you go to work instead of train.

To respond to the question, I strongly believe the reason for the "bike commute" profile, is to be able to have different data screens, as well as being able to sort them out in Garmin connect. Unlike the "e-bike" profile, that do calculate calories burnt differently than normal bike profiles.
I have Three different road bike profiles. One for general training with my power meter, one for riding with HR only and one for racing/cycling events.
But that can be achieved by copying an existing bike activity. And as of now they can't be sorted out in Connect, that's the issue... But maybe the "backend" has not been updated to support it yet (although I saw this profile added already six month ago or so in my old 945)
I think it all depends on how you "commute" - if you ride it as a serious ride to work, then you are more likely to track as a bike ride for example (at least I would). I would keep commute more for a leisurely sort of ride where the intent isn't to work up a sweat ( as you may not have facilities).
At the end of the day - its a choice and Garmin has provided us with a huge range of choices and its up to us how we use them. No one is forcing you to use them in a rigid way.
You could say what is the point of 60% of the listed activities - especially when you can copy one activity and save it as to what you want.
I don't mind having it there, quite the opposite, but I do mind that I can't filter those activities out in Connect...
Edit the event type - then you can filter based on event type i.e. classify as training, touring, fitness or recreational
