Epix 2 vs Forerunner 745/ Fenix 6X Pro/Multiband/All systems: GPS comparison

Finally, i was able to test the Epix 2 outside and the accuracy looks definitely good. I don't have years of experience with GPS running/cycling to make any comparison but i'm completely satisfied with the first run.

While i could use another thread i prefer to have my own also for future tests.

While the difference between the 2 is negligible(for me at least) the smoothness of the Epix 2 is awesome. Also we didn't always followed exactly the same path and sometime i was also in the middle of the road as there were no cars but i don't remember all the small details so don't want to highlight anything that looks a bit strange but i'm unsure if it's correct or not.

There is a bit of offset on the first 1.5 km on the Epix but i'm not sure if i did something wrong(i'm not used to the UI of Garmin's top watches and i started the activity immediately, without waiting for the GPS lock) or if it's really something from the Epix...still not a big deal.

The red part is due to the GPS lock probably and the bridge...the green circle is ok as we had to avoid some snow on the track...still, everything is a bit offset until 1/1.5km, as you can see from the GPS track on the forerunner.

It's lovely how in the below part i, really, went near the canal because it was looking more clear than the bicycle path(the other person followed the normal route but not sure if it was middle or on the edge).

The below situations looks really smooth and correct(except minor issues).

Parts with some issues:

-part of the offset that i talked about, during the first 1/1.5km

-in this case i stayed on the bridge. Stairs have been missed too.

That's it for the moment. Next run could be this sunday or in 2 weeks...depends on the weather Smiley

  • And here we are again...thanks for all the comments and questions(joking of course but still didn't expect no interest at all and i'm not looking for more with the next post Smiley).

The other person changed the watch so this time it will be Epix 2(with multiband) Vs Fenix 6X Pro(smart recording instead of 1sec...will fix it for the next run).

I would start by saying that the accuracy of the Epix 2 with multiband is U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E... M-I-N-D  B-L-O-W-I-N-G...absolutely crazy...that's it.

Yes, I'm exaggerating a bit but congratulation to Garmin for this masterpiece watch. I'm sorry that the Fenix had the "smart tracking" instead of "every second tracking" but usually, people tend to say that the difference should not be big between the 2 systems. Will test it during the next run of course.

Once again, i don't have years of experience with GPS for comparison and this is not a very challenging area but the difference with Fenix 6X Pro(correct me if i'm wrong but it was one of the top watches from Garmin until a few months ago) it's like day and night.

Quick comparison(Epix on the left, F6X Pro on the right) that is showing a really good result(in my opinion of course) with only 100m difference over 13.7km of run.

While the comparison is pretty good, once again, it's the smoothness and the accuracy of the Epix track that is mind-blowing.

I'm posting only 2 comparisons considering that a detailed view can be seen directly from the 2 activities.

Here, i was expecting something better from the Epix(there is a roundabout not shown on the map and the Fenix did a better job).

And to finish, few screenshots from the phone with a higher zoom:

  • Interesting, I am finding All Systems mode (without multiband) to be consistently more accurate compared to multiband on.

I believe my experienced echoed that a few other posters on here. Definitely a curiously outcome.

  • Thx for your time and effort in making this comparison. I am thinking of switcing from F6 Pro to Epix so this is a great help.

If you will have a chance please compare Epix with and without multiband.

It seems it is much better than F6 in any mode, I wonder how much is due to multiband oe is the new chip just better.

  • I could try the same route without the multiband.
I would expect similar results considering how accurate was the first run against the Forerunner. I'm more curious to see if switching from "smart recording" to "every sec recording" will change anything for the Feniix.

let's see what happens if i redo the same route without the multiband...while i found the run with "all systems only" pretty good, i didn't find anything bad on the run with multiband but it's my second outside run so i have less data then you.

  • Here we go with a similar route without multiband.

Quick recap with the Fenix 6

Activities can be seen here https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/8570122723 and here https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/8570187717

I will not post any screenshot comparison with the Fenix as it's clear the difference in smoothness while it's not a big deal for the final distance or other factors.

I would say that the difference with or without multiband is negligible in this type of area but i still find the multiband more accurate.

There's a bit of offset here and there but overall super accurate.
I stayed always(well 99% of the time) on the right edge(running direction) of the bicycle path.

  • Thanks. It seems there is little difference between multiband and multiGNSS in open areas. But both look much better then F6.

  • Good to have this kind of comparison with a Forerunner. The Fenix 5 and 6 were not very good for GPS accuracy. I'm taking my Vertix 2 to compare from time to time, it's another watch using multi band, and Coros was the best brand for GPS accuracy to me (comparing with Suunto 9, Polar Grit X and Fenix 6x). But the Epix 2 is cleaner, and is not smoothing too much. If the Vertix 2 was 7.5 or 8/10 for GPS, the Epix seems to be solid 8.5 or 9/10. There is no comparison with the Fenix 6x, it just totally kills it.

One remark : if you use Garmin website or app to show the GPS track, there are less points, I'm quite certain. Check from Quantified self, it's also a great way to merge traces and compare them. There are more points displayed.

  • Little OT

    What is Quantified self?

Its great but its a one man show. Epix ist not reconised, but datas are comming in.

  • nicest thing about this site is the ability to see a heat map of all your activity and then to filter it by activity types.
