Storage Capacity and Maps

I have the base model Epix and when I connect to Garmin Express I can see that I only have 650mb of free space as the map (Europe) has taken the vast majority of the 16GB. I either have to have all of Europe or none. It would be good if I could just have my country or select by country.

Anyway, what happens if we don't install the maps? will it connect via my phone for following a running route.

Is only having 650mb of space an issue? I can listen to music via my phone rather than the watch but it just feels like my entire storage is consumed by a map...

  • In Express, click 'Manage Maps', then 'TopoActive',
You'll likely find a tick box next to 'TopoActive Europe'.
Click 'Change Region' under that, and you can choose to instead install the West, Central or East region that is appropriate to you.

I have West, which leaves more than 50% free space, enough to load any other non European region alongside, except for North America.

  • ah, thanks, I will give that a go. When I connected earlier that was all greyed out but I will have another go. 50% would be perfect. Really appreciate the reply.

  • Hi. As suggested you can choose from 3 European Regions. I chose Central Europe. 6,4GB. Download and installing it took about 15 to 20 Minutes. Also uploaded 850 mp3 files to the Epix and still have 1,3 GB free. There's really no reason to have all maps on the EPIX and thus also no need for 32GB. I had the 32GB version before the one I have now which was so faulty that I had to return it. So I had the comparison between the two and the slate / steel is more than enough for my needs. What I don't need are Golf or Skiing maps, but haven't yet found a way to delete them.

  • You can just delete the map files (using explorer on Windows or Android File Transfer on Mac)

D1399430A.img : Golf Map - CourseView Europe, Middle East & Africa
    D2419380A.img : Golf Map - CourseView Pacific
    D2471430A.img : Golf Map - CourseView Americas

I can't remember which are the ski map names, but it should be obvious as they'll have older file date compared to the Topo maps you've installed.

I *can* see the need for 32GB, as it would be nice to hold Western Europe AND any other single region (so wouldn't have to delete my home region if about to go out of region to North America or into Central or Eastern Europe) - but its not a massive deal - those kind of trips don't just happen as a short notice surprise!

  • Maps on the "cheap" model are a joke. 900€....and no, as example, Maps only for my country (germany). I have to take DACH Maps....but i want go outside Germany

  • But it's not like one moment you're in Germany and the next moment elsewhere. So where is the problem of deleting what you don't need and loading what you need for the time being? How often will you actually be forced to do that? Going between Autria and Germany which I do often, there's no need to that for me. I may have to do it when planning to go Benelux, but then I know that before travelling.

  • This worked perfectly. Unfortunately it deletes the whole map and forces a download of the region (I assumed it would just delete the unnecessary regions) it took a few hours but all sorted.
    Thanks for the tip.

  • I don't agree. When I'm running in the borderzone of Germany and Benelux, it's frustrating that I 'don't have maps when crossing the border. Specially with a watch of €900. So for me the 32GB is +€100 and more than 2 months waiting worth it.

  • But there's enough space to load the whole of Europe if so wanted on the 16GB EPIX. I still don't see the problem. After all I had the Black Sapphire
