Start/Stop button doesn't work

Hi all,

Unboxed a shiny new Epix 2 sapphire today, and the start/stop button doesn't seem to work - it just feels a bit mushy.

Does this button have a lock on it or something to stop it being activated accidentally?

Not what I was expecting for a grand worth of watch Sob

Any ideas?

  • “doesn’t work”, or “feels a bit mushy”? There’s a difference. If the latter, it’s been discussed endlessly here already, do a search. Short version: return it if you don’t like it.

  • Crikey, you are a joy, aren't you, fella? Let's hope you aren't representative of this community as a whole.

To clarify, it's both... It doesn't work AND feels mushy, as per my post. It's not that difficult to comprehend, but I shall elaborate, just for you!

'Doesn't work' is the opposite of 'does work'. As in, it does not function.

'Mushy', as in 'not tactile', like the other buttons.

I'm guessing the two are somehow related. As I've only had the watch for a few small hours, I wanted to check whether some software lock was present. I've searched the forums and found nothing about the start/stop button on the Epix not working in similar fashion. I will however strive to do better next time, oh gatekeeper of the boards.

Short version, you'll probably live longer if you didn't get so bent out of shape around newbies' first posts. Go outside and get some air; it's clear this place makes you angry somehow if that's how you treat new members.

  • Sounds like you should return your broken watch.

Also, between the two of us, you seem to be the one "bent out of shape". I am simply offering the drama-free answer to your conundrum.

  • I had mine replaced for that EXACT reason.  Mine was very mushy and sometimes wouldn't take a keypress.  My NEW replacement came this week and all of the buttons feel great and activate properly.  The serial number is much higher than my original one.

I was going to post this exact same question... I'm glad I didn't now don't want to anger the beast Clown

Mine did the same and I had to open it up and re-seat the internal button contacts onto the board. Looks like it's able to wiggle free and the contacts no longer touch correctly.

Don't recommend it, but if you have no problems opening up you shiny new $900 watch, it's very easily done using a iFixit kit.

Talk to the shop you bought it from or send it back would be my advice.

  • Thanks for the response - mine doesn't take a key press at all and the watch rattles so I'm guessing something came loose.

Faith in the humans on this board, restored! Thank you Thumbsup tone1

  • Thanks - I was tempted to do this myself as I fly to Mexico in 4 days... I don't really have the time to send it back!

Did you happen to take any photos of this surgery

  • I did, will see if I can post them here when I get back from work

  • I am really sorry for the awful luck with your new watch. Please do not hesitate to return it back to the vendor as soon as possible when you can.

  • My Epix 2 sapphire is about one month old and the Start/Stop button has started to act up. Sometimes is hard to press and sometimes it doesn't take the keypress at all.

One thing which is also weird, is when you keep pressing the button multiple times, it becomes more tactile for a short while but then returns to the non-tactile mushy feeling.

I've tried Garmin recommended actions to soak the watch in a lukewarm water, but that helped only for a short while.

I contacted the local Garmin support here in Finland and their response was that "this is normal behavior" and they will only replace the watch in case the Start/Stop button does not work at all.

    Any thoughts?
