HRM Pro + Running Dynamics

I am using the HRM Pro strap with my Garmin Epix via the Virtual Running activity and Zwift.  Sometimes I get running dynamics and sometimes I don't, and I can't figure out why.  These are the steps I am taking before my runs:

1) On the watch, I select Virtual Run and wait for my footpod and HRM Pro to connect (I check via the Sensors menu option just to make sure).

2) I start Zwift on my phone and it then it connects to the Epix for everything (cadence, HR, etc)

3) After my run, I stop the activity and it uploads to Garmin Connect.

Sometimes the running dynamics are there and sometimes not.  I know the HRM Pro has to connect to the watch via ANT+ not Bluetooth, but how do I know?  Is there a way in the uploaded activity to know how it was connected?  And would there be another reason why the dynamics isn't there?  I make sure I have the strap on correctly each time and it is showing the HRM Pro in the activity as a connected sensor.

  • Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm almost positive I didn't see any running dynamics screens on the Epix2 on Wednesday when it captured dynamics data, but with this stuff I never pound the table with absolutes.  It is true that I do assorted fiddling with my new Epix to get it to display what I want, but I would certainly never have guessed that changing what the run activity DISPLAYS on the watch during the activity would affect what the run activity RECORDS and UPLOADS.   I will certainly look to see what I have for data screens and settings and see if anything rings a bell for something I'd have tried to tweak since Wednesday.

Yes, I agree, but I suggested to use the RD fields for the quick check of the functionality of the RD feature of HRM-Pro. Seeing it before you start your run, is certainly much better than finding it out only once you finish the run, and upload the activity to GC Slight smile

  • I just confirmed the EPIX2 has a fourth and fifth screen as you described with RD data for the run activity, but without wearing the HRM-Pro they aren't available when I start a bogus run activity sitting here in my recliner.  Grin Absolutely worth experiments tomorrow while wearing the HRM - Good call - Thanks!
On a *potentially* related note, I was listening to music on my phone today while running using bluetooth - something I wasn't doing on Wednesday.  The HRM / watch are paired via ANT+, not bluetooth, and the phone has no bluetooth pairing to the HRM (but of course does have a pairing for the watch), but perhaps bluetooth was interfering with the ANT+ signal between the HRM and the watch ? Dunno - still trying to identify something to explain today's loss of data after Wednesday's success.
