Weather Not Updating

Anyone else not getting updates on their weather widget? I’ve already made sure my iPhone has all the permissions and settings correctly. It just doesn’t update.

  • I had the same problem I have the epix since few days,so still at the first charge and few run therefore I had no much time to play with it. At the beginning the meteo widget was working  properly. Then in the last 2 days  it started to show "waiting for data" message. With no reason it started to work again and without changing  anything in the configuration. i've just preseed the synch icon on the Connect application in my android phone. This was not happening with my previous Fenix 6X pro.

I switched off the watch and the phone. Started both again and the widget was displaying the data as normal without touching anything in both the watch and phone.

It is not very clear what was the problem of if it'll happen again. I'll keep monitored the situation. Maybe the watch lost connectivity with phone but I was receìiving notification and exercise upload as norma.

  • I had the same issue and resolved it when I allowed the Garmin Connect app on my iPhone to always use the GPS/location service (and not only during use of the app as I had it configured before.

Since that change the weather update worked as expected. But I disabled it later due to massive battery drain on my iPhone.

Now I use a watchface with openweather support. This updates every 20 minutes. I assume there are widgets available which do the same.

  • So I've been noticing that it does update, but only once per hour and there is no way to force it to update. That is way too long of an interval. It should be updating more often then that. maybe every 10-15 min. This makes it highly inaccurate when I'm driving as well as where I live the temperature can change rapidly. Is this a bug?

  • As far as I understood, the 1h update cycle is "by design".

  • That's really unfortunate. They should allow you to configure it if you are willing to sacrifice battery life. I swear I read somewhere it should be every 20 min.

  • I just noticed I'm never getting any GPS signal and my location always shows the same spot, that could be part of the problem. Hmm.. now to debug this.

  • You should only need to get a GPS signal once to get weather working provide everything else is set correctly.

Weather comes from the phone, which gets its weather from a nearby weather station. Whether or not you have weather, depends on whether or not your phone is connecting to a suitable weather source and whether or not that weather information is being sent to the watch. And that will depend on whether or not the settings on your phone are appropriate for the weather source (usually location needs to be Always on iPhone at least), and whether GCM is always running in the background.

If you have not already done so check this from Garmin - https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Mxs4eRXzRdAYJ0h7yyWaj9

As for the apparent massive battery drain that GCM supposedly causes? It's nothing that I've seen. I charge my iPhone every night (it's an iPhone X and needs charging every night) but there's usually over 50% charge left. For instance my news app Stuff has used 42% compared to Connect 25% but I still have over 80% of iPhone battery left. So, while Connect might be one of the bigger users of battery (background activity) the effect overall on battery use is not enough to require extra charging during the day. If anything, I should close my news app.

While the app might be responsible for 25% of battery usage, if that total battery usage is low then 25% of not much is actually not much.

  • Hmm. Mine is 1 per hour no matter what. Do you use android or iPhone?
