Garmin needs to make a sleep tracking device for Epix and Fenix users, anyone else agree?

Can Garmin make an updated Vivosmart 5 or some kind of comfortable device for sleep and non activity wearing.  I just bought the Epix2 and love it, but there is no way I can sleep with this on my wrist.  I am a whoop user as well and love the simplicity of the band but hate that it doesn't share any data with Garmin.

For that reason, I wish Garmin would come out with a band similar to Vivosmart 4 that would work together with the Epix.

Does Garmin read these forums??  I'm not the first to ask this!!!

  • I think it is very comfortable and I hardly even know it is there, but then I have been wearing my Garmins 24 hours a day for many years so maybe I am just used to it. And I have a 14cm wrist and wear the epix on just the second hole so the band barely even fits me, but it doesn't feel big on me for some reason.

  • I don't find it an issue at all, and I have a fairly small wrist. Perhaps the problem is habituation. I have had my Epix for a few days and, for comparison, have been using my Fenix 6S Pro on my other wrist, and there it feels bulky and awkward because that wrist is not accustomed to having anything on it.

  • I imagine that there would be many use cases matching what you describe. I, like many on this forum, wear my watch to bed. But, frankly, many people do not like to do so. That, and with other tech companies throwing their hat in on the sleep health thing, with Garmin's experience in this area, I do not see why they could not accomplish this. But, with that I would see them create a subscription service being added to the mix (for some sort of advanced sleep metric data analysis), which I am not a fan of seeing as a result of such a venture.

  • No issues at all, I don't event notice it.

  • I don't have any problem with the Epix too...it's bigger than my Venu 2 but it's still lightweight and perfectly wearable day and night, imo.

  • I’m in the camp of not wanting to sleep with the Epix (or any bulky watch). I get that some people do it. Years ago I used to sleep with a fenix, but frequently woke up with scratches and bruises on my face from the watch (I toss and turn a lot). I also cycle and don’t use the watch to track my rides (Edge 1030), so I rely on Connect to manage my data from multiple sources. A simple, lightweight wrist strap, worn 24/7, could not only provide data to a health platform, it could also be an HR provider for my Edge 1030 and other BT and ANT+ devices.

  • I expect they'd be reluctant to come up with such a product, thinking perhaps it would erode sales of their higher end units (not saying I <agree> with that, just tossing out there what might be their reasoning for not doing a device like you suggest). Also, because of their continued focus on more and more usable health data (advanced sleep, SpO2, on and on) - I'd bet they think that a reduced function band or ring like Whoop or Oura wouldn't be able to get them the data they want. Again, I'm just guessing as to what they might be thinking. Heck for all I know they could be about to announce literally that very thing at any moment - but I doubt it. Just looking at their recent history, coming out with a ring or downsized old-school FitBit type thing for sleep alone, isn't where they're headed these days. We'll see!!

  • The one thing a lot of companies are striving for is the concept of an ecosystem. Garmin, Strava, Apple, Training Peaks, etc. all want to be the central collector of data and provide insight into health and training. However, the balance between “open” and “proprietary” is a tricky. It’s only recently that Garmin began using Connect as a cloud-based synchronizer of user data from various Garmin devices, and providing user feedback.  However, seems like a work in progress and there isn’t anything tying me to the Garmin ecosystem right now.  Garmin isn’t quite offer me enough insight to keep me from using a Karoo2 over an Edge 1030.  Strava and others provide just enough aggregation and insight. However, if Garmin had a “health band” that was tied to (and proprietary to) Garmin products and a Garmin ecosystem, and the combination of all of that provided me with all of my activity tracking and health insight, I’d be all in.  I realize I can sort of get that today, but I’m not going to wear an Epix 24/7 to get it.

That said, I need to see where Snapshot is going, and if that will start providing trending and training level suggestions. It may be possible that consistent daily snapshots are just as effective as 24/7 monitoring.

  • yep I get all that - but I bet Garmin thinks (rightly or wrongly) that all/most/many of their users WILL wear their full-on watch units 24/7, so as to maximize the potential health data derived from that style of 24/7 wearing and tracking (I do and I have no problem with the size or comfort at all). Garmin might very well be grossly misreading the market/or their users (or both) - time will tell.- Seems like Garmin isn't shy or reticent in developing and releasing various devices (of ALL types) so perhaps there's some skunk works project with a sleep-only thing. Maybe. (I bet not, but....you never know!). Will be interesting to see how the next few years unfold.

  • I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep with the Epix on my wrist but I just gave it a try. To my surprise I slept just as well as any other night. Like other I'm surprised how comfortable to wear and light the watch feels despite the size
