Zwift ride doesn’t add to training load

Last six months I used forerunner 245 as my main watch. I recorded all my rides using Zwift only and was able to see all the numbers changing including vo2 max and training load/status

I did the same today and Epix doesn’t show me any changes in load. Neither in number, nor in visual days chart. The only things that have changed is recovery hours, it has increased from 2 to 26 and the ride is visible in the history

Zwift ride is not visible in daily body battery and heart rate charts! When I drill down into this ride in Garmin connect I see all the numbers including heart rate that was quite high (it was intervals ride) but intensity minutes value is 2 which is ridiculous.

  • Firstbeat metrics are processed on device as it’s the individual device that has the licence, not Garmin Connect. If you are completing a ride in Zwift and Sync’ing it to GC, you will not get any of the firstbeat metrics.

The only way this will show is if you also record the ride on your watch, the watch processes the metrics and then uploads it to GC.

I record on both my watch and Zwift but I do not upload data from Zwift to connect. I am not concerned about distance, I am concerned with power/ times/ training load and training effect.

  • This is simply not true

it was working for me with old 245 watch once the workout gets to the watch itself. This feature was rolled out about a year ago

Well, believe it or not, that’s the situation.

Edit: Well, there you go, I stand corrected. This was updated in July 2021 to allow Zwift workouts to contribute to training load. As those metrics are calculated on device, GC must sync with your watch in order for the watch to calculate those values and populate them in GC.

Have a read to see if your device is setup correctly: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2021/06/garmin-training-status-now-includes-zwift-trainerroad-the-sufferfest-and-tacx-app-workouts.html

It appears Training Effect isn’t included.

  • Sure, I even stumbled upon a Garmin explanation and there is one more requirement - your heart rate should hit 70% of your max heart rate. I do not know if it is crucial but all my workouts were contributing to training load. They do not say it explicitly but it does change training effect and training status as well.
    well, it should.
Hopefully this could be resolved in the next Epix software. Now it is quite a pain to use “indoor cycling “ activity as it is very annoying, asks every time to connect my smart trainer and obviously it screws up ERG mode from Zwift.
I could also use my crank powermeter but cmon, why should I do all this dances? It was just working before.

  • Until the final workaround connect your trainer's power-meter/speed sensor output to your watch but don't connect the trainer itself. In this way, the ERG mode won't be messed up.

Start the indoor activity. It will measure the power, cadence, you will receive training load and everything. At the end of the ride, I usually fill the distance and elevation field from Zwift, to measure my total mileage, elevation correctly. Even if Zwift/Garmin will correct the training status update, I will use this because it's very simple and I can be absolutely sure that everything measured correctly.

  • Just a quick update. Garmin had acknowledged this and this is being investigated by devs. It should contribute, full stop.

  • I agree with what you are saying.  Other Garmin devices will update the Zwift activity with the stats you are talking about even if NOT recorded on Garmin device.  The way it works for the non believers is:

    Ride recorded to Zwift

    Ride uploads to connect

    Ride sync's to watch\Edge

Watch\Edge updates the ride with stats

Watch\Edge re-uploads the ride to connect where you can see the stats.

Do you still have your 245 watch, you could just leave it powered on and Syncing and then the Zwift file should get its stats updated by that watch until Garmin resolve the issue with the Epix.

  • It's working on my Epix 2 with Zwift.  I do not record the ride on my watch at all (other than broadcasting the HR sometimes), and I have Zwift setup to sync with Garmin Connect.  After my ride, I see the activity in Garmin Connect along with the Load and VO2 Max (if my HR got high enough for long enough time).  If I go into Load, it even shows whether it was "anaerobic", "High aerobic" or "Low Aerobic".  If I go into Body Battery, it shows a little ride icon at the bottom timeline and I can see my battery dropped a good amount during the ride.

Have you tried disconnecting Zwift from Garmin Connect and then reconnecting it?

  • Hey, it didn’t work for me for a single time. Even during the investigation I was asked to record 3 rides with different settings and all of them contributed.

And my 245 went to my son :)

  • You need to update your firmware and it will be fixed
