The Epix vs Fenix debate is rather comical

There seems to two very distinct crowds. You are either all in on the Epix or Fenix, with no rational balance.

Precursor: Both are great watches, can't go wrong with either.

With that said, why are so many users convincing themselves they need the battery life of the Fenix? Unless you live out in the middle of nowhere in a "Ted shed" I do not see the issue. Is 6 days not enough? Is 16 days not enough if you do so wish to turn off AOD and use gestures as a compromise?

If you do find yourself spending a week in the woods, is there an issue with packing a small power pack? Or a small hiking solar panel that many multi-day hikers often invest in?

There is some off infatuation with needing the "extreme" of either end. For Fenix users they seem to be the "if the apocalypse hit which would last the longest?" group.

If you take your watch off when you shower, this shouldn't even be a deciding factor as you realistically could spot chare it daily for ~10-15 min

  • I also had great concern because of amoled display/outdoor use. But the Epix is just great and the display is so crispy Just great!

  • That is good to know and I am leaning towards Epix. I haven't done as many 100 milers as you, but my experience with the two that I've done is that the actual battery usage was higher than estimated in both cases.

In the first case the extended mode of Suunto Ambit 3 Peak was supposed to last 30 hours, but the watch died in just over 26 hours. In the second case I tweaked my Fenix 6X so that it showed over 70 hours at the start. However, after 30 hours of the race it had 20 and something hours left at the end - still plenty of the battery reserve but it consumed way more than initially estimated. Battery estimates don't include following a course, for example. I like to do that so that I can track distance remaining to aid stations.

Anyway, I don't plan a 100 miler this year. 100k will be the longest distance, so at least for now I should be OK with Epix.

  • I am simply blown away by the screen, the pace/GPS accuracy and the battery life.  You will have no issues with any 100k and if I get into HR100 this year (I am on the waitlist) I'll see how long the watch lasts.  I have another 50k in 2 months where I will wear a HR belt and optimize the battery life as much as possible but will have a course loaded with aid stations.  I will report back with the estimated battery life on that one, hopefully enough for 48h at HR100.  If not I will deal with it, I already have volunteers for crew and pacer since I am old enough to have a pacer for the entire race.  PM me and I can share comparisons between watches with you.

  • Hardrock 100 is awesome! I've paced the second half of it in the last year, and that is one of most beautiful and hard trail runs that I've done in my life. Most of the terrain is fairly open so running with GPS only should not be an issue.

  • My thoughts exactly.

I know the Epix will last the week, I've tested it.

But I never really had to think about battery for my 6X.

I keep thinking about it for the Epix and checking it. Yea, its a me issue to get used to.

  • Hi all, I add my point of view which is probably slightly different...

I like the transflective screen better aesthetically!

I know, i know... But beauty is in the eye of the beholder Slight smile

I am simply bothered by a watch that shines its own light, a good transflective is looking more "natural" to me. And love the "printed on paper" look in daylight that my regular (non sapphire, non solar) Fenix 6 has, though this is a little lost as I understood on Fenix 7 due to touch layer. Had in the past amoled watches and great from many points of view, however never really liked the look in the end...

It's not about battery, actually... I am in reality bit disappointed that you cant get a 7x without the solar overlay, i would actually have liked a version in which the solar ring would be replaced by additional screen real estate with additional pixels to have an overall greater resolution and dimension with same pitch size. Obviously this would negatively impact battery, but I would gladly trade - say - 3-4 days battery life on 3+ weeks normal duration for a larger screen....

I know, kind of strange opinion, but can't argue with personal taste Stuck out tongue

  • So the epix display plays in a total other league as i asume also owning a suunto 9 peak and waiting desperate for my epix. i am 51 years old and the suunto display is sometimes hard to read. thanks for your valueable infos!

  • Epix is greatly mor readable and polished in terms of UX. I love the looks of Suunto 9 peak Grantor Sapphire, but...Display is about as goood as my Nokia 3110 back in 1999 on Suunto. Sucks, IMHO. Definitely worse than even regular Fenix.

  • Yeah, suunto design language i like a lot but the user experience, the software is really from the stoneage.

  • My watch history goes:
    f3 - f3hr - f5X - f6X - Epix2 (2 weeks) - f7X
I had the Epix for 2 weeks and got a good 8 days out of the battery, which is about what I was getting from my 6X which is very good, AOD off, gesture on, GPS only, maps in dark mode.

And this is a me problem, I couldn't get over always checking the battery, do I have enough left, blah blah.
Epix screen is gorgeous to look at, so nice and hi res.

No I dont do multi day hikes or anything like that, just 1.5 to 2 hours of activities per day, a mix of indoor and outdoor. I just decided at this stage that I value the extra battery life of the f7X SS more and not having to think about it nearly as much, so swapped it.

    Fenix 7X SS  First impressions:
Screen contrast is better than my 6X, the black is black, not blue, even with the back light on.
The screen appears a little crisper then the 6X, text appears sharper.
The maps appear to look a little better and easier to read than on the 6X, not as good as the Epix though.
I do prefer the slightly bigger 1.4" screen, even though it has no where near the res of the Epix.
There is some reflection but still perfectly viewable outdoors, indoors I have back light gesture on, which works as well as the Epix in activating.
Moving through the menus and dragging the map around is noticeably smoother on the 7X over the Epix, I assume because there arent as many pixels to update.
So even though the 7X screen is still 280px, it seems a better quality than the 6X.
I do miss the Epix screen, and would buy it again if it came in a 1.4" screen with solar format.

Only had for 2 days but so far:
    Indoor bike 30 mins - Epix 2%, f7X 1%
Walk 45 mins Epix 2% GPS only, f7X 1% GPS All Systems
Run 30 mins Epix 2% GPS only, f7X less than 1% GPS All Systems

So now instead of thinking about battery, when I go for a walk, run, cycle or swim, I see how much lux I can get Joy
