Indoor cycling weird new FTP suggestion

I’ve done my first trainer workout using Epix today. I decided to give a try for Stamina and recorded this one using watch itself. Usually I do Zwift recording only. I did have some intense intervals today and after the workout was finished, Epix has given me a ridiculous number as my new FTP suggestion. I didn’t do a big 20 minute effort, it was a set of intervals following z2-3 base ride just to get clock to 90 minutes. My best 20 min power was 141W for this one. Therefore the value of 196W as Garmin suggests is completely off. The last time I did my FTP test it was 181W.
I tapped “accept” and then peeked into the numbers in TrainingPeaks and was surprised a bit

Any ideas on how this is being calculated now?

    From Garmin Connect:

    What Is FTP?

    Your Personal Power Level

    Functional threshold power (FTP) is a measurement of how much power your body produces while cycling. It’s considered to be the highest power level that you can maintain for one hour.

    FTP = Watts/Body Weight (kg)

    Once you know your FTP, you can:

    • Set the proper pace for sustained endurance workouts.
    • Personalize zones for more effective training.
    • Monitor progress and seek to improve existing endurance limits.

    It appears to be an extrapolation for a possible one hour maximum, not an average of actual measurements.

  • This looks completely off. I do have gradual increase through all my ftp tests. But this looks very optimistic, I wonder if this is a good idea to make such suggestions for an athlete? Someone not experienced would accept this happily and then every workout based on FTP would become a torture

  • I do not use Zwift so can not say for sure, but perhaps the Garmin database does not have access to all your Zwift workout data.  This would mean that you would have to do more workouts using the watch so that Garmin's FTP estimate would be more realistic.

    Just a thought.

  • It actually has. Every Zwift workout was uploaded to Garmin connect. Now Garmin supports Zwift and calculated training effect and status properly, this was the main reason to stop using watch and then delete duplicates from everywhere later on.
    Anyways, I have to try recording my workout with my Edge 830 and see how does it behave. In summer it was giving me FTP suggestion according to my real FTP, now it seems Epix is slightly off
