I'm impressed by the epix gen 2. It would be perfect if it could connect to cellphone for answering/calling from the watch. Is there any indication that Garmin is looking in that direction for gen 3?

If there is an external headset, why not connect that directly to the phone?
The phone is for example in the backpack and someone is calling you and you see the number (and perhaps name) on the wearable display and don’t want to talk with that person for some reasons. If your headset is only connected to the phone, you don’t know who is calling…

That is simply not true. The watch still shows the call notification with the name and number of who is calling. That is managed by Garmin Connect. I never connect my headset to the watch but yet I can still answer from the watch (Fenix 6X).
Ah, ok. Didn’t know that, because I never have connected my phone with gcm and a headset during an activity. I think, I even never have tried this...I rarely use my phone to make calls.
Some third-party apps seem to provide the capability to initiate phone calls from the watch, too bad it is not builtin.

I wouldn't click on that link.
