No audio prompts through phone

I recently received my Epix 2 as an upgrade from my old Forerunner 945. After a couple of runs I noticed that I'm no longer hearing audio prompts on each lap. I always run/bike/walk with airpod pros connected to my iphone listening to podcasts or music. Sometimes with maps navigation as well. On the fr945 this combination always worked.

Here's everything I've tried:

1) toggling the prompts settings off/on with syncs in between

2) rebooting the watch and phone

3) re-pairing multiple times

4) re-installing garmin connect on my iphone

5) connecting airpod pros directly to the watch (this does make audio prompts work, but it's not how I want to use them)

6) connecting watch to garmin express on my computer and updating watch + maps

7) resetting watch to default settings

8) manual laps via button press and auto laps (neither work)

Has anyone else experienced this? Did I miss any troubleshooting steps I should try? Should I try anything in particular again to double check?

I doubt it matters, but:

Watch: epix 2 saphire titanium black

Watch software version: 7.20

Phone: iphone 13 mini

Garmin express version: 7.11.0.0

  • Welcome in the world of software bugs: Garmin epix!

You'll have to live with that. Don't expect garmin to help.

  • I also have this issue. Brand new Epix and iPhone 15. What is frustrating is that this is the only mention of this issue, and it's almost 2 years old. I guess if after 2 years Garmin didn't fix it, it means that it will never be fixed... Sad...

  • Hi,

New to this complaining thing.  I've had my Epix Pro Gen 2 since Aug 2023 and turn-by-turn navigation works fine if the headset is connected to my watch and listening to music (all good except it does drain the battery).  When I listen to my Spotify on my phone, I only get notifications that I've set in my run profile (heartrate, pace, calories and power etc.) and no navigation prompts.  I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Flip 5.

I thought this was my inability to set up my phone, but I've tried multiple times to correct this, but have come to realize that I will use it with my watch for now and patiently wait for a fix.

How does one put "this" bug in Garmin's ear???

  • I am on current beta and getting audio prompts through my phone - so I would say that in the recent beta its definitely fixed..

  • I am also on current beta and no navigation.

I'll give my RUN activity a try today and see if I can hear my navigation alerts.

    Noticed last night during my warm-up/stretch routine (CARDIO activity), that when my phone was plugged in, I was also getting alerts from my RUN activity (PACE, CADENCE, HEARTRATE, ELEVATION, CALORIES AND DRINK).  These are the alerts I have setup for my RUN activity.  Strange...This almost points to an Android setting.  Maybe try RUN activity with my phone plugged in ;

I would always only get my heartrate with CARDIO activity, but none of the rest of the Alerts that I have setup (TIME AND CALORIES).

  • Please try creating a "Workout" aka Run Interval in Garmin Connect and push to the phone. Some "In Activity" alerts might work. However, "pushed" workouts aka run intervals based upon any metric; time, distance, do not work from watch to phone.  How many people these days run without their phone - unless its a race and even then some races prohibit headphones? So any watch claiming to be worth $500 or more should be able to push a simple Interval notification from the watch to the phone. NOTE is tis not a BLE/phone or other issue - otherwise the other features would not work. Its the CODE, plan and simple and GARMIN is refusing to fix it or change their marketing even though they acknowledge its an issue.

  • I'm more interested at this point in time with "navigation" prompts as I'm somewhat ok with waiting for a fix for the full metric audio prompts.

  • However, "pushed" workouts aka run intervals based upon any metric; time, distance, do not work from watch to phone.

They do work as expected for me. In Garmin Connect, my device, audio-prompts, I have the following settings:

I only have the pace alert after every lap.

With this configuration, as a lap finishes, I get the average pace of the lap, then announcements about the next lap and its duration and pace targets.

The only thing that doesn't work is the female/male option. I always have a female voice, regardless of the setting.

  • I'm in touch with Garmin about Audio Prompt through Smartphone under the Beta 17.xx, the situation is quite strange.

Garmin said that Watch settings (Audio Prompts, Voice Male/Female & Dialect (EN/FR/etc.) are not used when audio output comes from smartphone.

    ---

Then you should only heard Male Voice ............................

Then the dialect is the one from your Current Locale on your smatphone and language setting for the App (in terms of smartphone app setting) ..........

    ---

But i have multiple issues and watch setting generate abnormal behaviour regarding Audio Prompt through smartphone.

I also explain that it is not possible to manage this audio ouput differently or we need specific options to manage it.

    update from 2024-05-16

in my tests i can obtain Female audio output, but it is not consistent, and strange see below

    my smartphone

    Region is "France"

Prefered Languages (LANGUES PREFEREES) is "Français" (iphone language), i have "English" as secondary/alternative)

    ---

    Test 6

Garmin Connect smartphone Language = French

Audio Prompts settings --> Dialect = FR / Voice = Female

Result --> Voice = Male – Dialect = FR – Language = English (according to pronunciation)

    ---

    Test 7

Garmin Connect smartphone Language = French

    Audio Prompts settings --> Dialect = EN-US / Voice = Male

Result --> Voice = Female – Dialect = FR – Language = English (according to pronunciation)

  • I've just added the following to my post titled 'Issues navigating a course route whilst running';

"...On a slightly different note, I seem to be missing the turn-by-turn alerts on the watch and/or on the headphones when I came home today (and I'm not sure if it's ever worked). I had my headphones connected to my phone (an iPhone 12) to listen to music whilst walking back and although my *watch* bleeped and alerted me of an upcoming turn, there was no associated turn prompt on the watch face (either a full screen instruction *or* an arrow/distance at the bottom of the map) and no audio prompt via the headphones, either. I did get audio prompts via the headphones for Pace (1km, etc.) and also for phone alerts (text messages, etc.) but not for anything to do with the navigation of the route. I've checked and triple-checked the settings for both system-wide Audio Prompts and also Activity-specific prompts, but everything within these show Turn Notifications to be on. So how come I'm getting no full-screen instructions on the watch face, arrows/distance alerts on the watch face, audio prompts on my headphones - just a bleep and vibration on my watch, and then I have to scrutinise the map to see which way I should be turning?! Any thoughts, please..?

Oh, and one other thing I did check, which I only found out about recently. During walking/running/navigating a course, I didn't realise that you could hold down the 'Menu' (left-middle) button and get more options specific to the activity that you're in the middle of - in this case, a scrollable list of the Turn-by-Turn navigations that the watch has planned for you to take during the route! So, this morning, despite getting no prompts on the headphones, the phone or the watch face, I did check that the TBT instructions had been generated successfully and they had - they just weren't ever showing on the watch face or prompting me over the headphones whilst I was moving."
