Can anyone please post some screenshots of the epix 2 GPS (only GPS L1, not All Systems and/or Multifrequency) tracks vs fēnix 6 series?

Is the infamous fēnix 6 GPS track offset finally gone? I’ve seen some impressive epix tracks with multi systems or frequencies turned on, but curious about the standard GPS (which Garmin has made big battery strides with). DCR posted some great epix tracks, but not vs fēnix 6.

Thanks in advance!

  • I've added the Epix track with all satellites and bands (blue track) and made the analysis public so that anyone can zoom in and pan around the map.

  • Hey - another question as I look at the fenix 6 tracks… which arm were you wearing the fenix 6 on when you ran this route? Much of the offset in the fenix 6 is to the left (if im oriented correctly). So I’m assuming you wore on left wrist. I know with my fenix 6 I get the offset typically on the side I’m wearing the watch on.

Since I wear my fenix 6 on my right wrist lately I’ve been running down the left side of the trails lol.

  • So here are my takeaways from this Q&A:

    1. The new f7 and epix GNSS chipsets even in GPS-only mode significantly reduce the track offset that plagued the f6 watches (even with f6 set multi-GNSS systems).

    2. There may be some further f7/epix tracking improvement to be had with multi-GNSS and multi-frequency options, albeit at the cost of battery.

    3. Garmin told me and (many others from my research) that the f6 tracking accuracy issue was because we needed to "soak" the watches. This practice of soaking never yielded better accuracy for me (or it looks like many others). In my opinion this can be confirmed as a problem with the f6 (Sony) GNSS chipset (or possibly related software limitations). I assume that the Garmin CSRs were just managing issues according to an FAQ or troubleshooting flowchart.

    4. When I get my epix, I expect that I can take advantage of the battery improvements that Garmin has made in the GPS-only mode and still get better tracking accuracy then my f6. I don't normally run in areas with cliffs, canyons, or other extreme conditions just in and out of some forests.

  • I can answer for him. The activity for F6 is from November and epic's from couple of days ago so it is save to say that both watches were worn on the same wrist.

  • Agree, Epix tracking is better, even in single band mode.

And looks like it's better for distance, I noticed my 6X pro solar is always around 5-10% short on distance than my friends 245 and 745 watches.....
