HRV and Sleep data

I would love to see this feature. I’ve been wearing a whoop for over a year and also tried Oura for a few months. I recently switched to garmin and I’m really missing this. 

The closest that Garmin offers natively is the health snapshot and your stress readings.

From what I’ve seen, there are a couple of apps that can be turned on manually during activity that will show hrv, but nothing that will track during sleep and show info similar to whoop (during deepest sleep) or Oura (nightly avg). If anyone knows otherwise, please share.  

No, you can't get the raw numbers (apart from the health snapshot). You'll only get a stress score from 0 to 100 per time frame (is it per minute? I actually have no idea). The health snapshot might help to understand your stress levels a little bit better, though, since you get an average stress score and an average HRV value at the same time. 

I'm missing it as well and I'm quite upset about it. As you say, Oura shows HRV, iWatch shows HRV, but for Garmin you have to wear a chest strap. Ridiculous.

Not really. Oura and Apple Watch interpret HRV from pulse rate variation - photoplethysmography.  Garmin uses the chest strap to measure HRV from the actual electrical signals from the heart. The HRV from the Health Snapshot is estimated in the same way as the other optical solutions. So, of the three, Garmin using a chest strap is the only one that actually measures HRV.

But to be honest, if there is a way to see HRV in long term (even the calculated one), it would be better than nothing. 

There is already several articles about how ppl spotted HRV changes before diagnosed with health issues.

Why do you feel seeing a graph of your HRV, as opposed to taking discrete measurements, would be of value? During sleep, a low stress reading is quite robustly indicative of a good HRV, and during the day you can take it anytime you want. But considering that wrist-based HRV measurements require you to be still, is there any value to seeing an all-day graph that presents numbers that are essentially inaccurate?

Technically, Garmin/FB Daily Stress is a proxy to HRV. It’s just instead of guesstimating RMSSD from OHR and presenting your with raw numbers that are meaningless without trends (is 53 good?), they normalize it to 0-100 scale and your rolling baseline. This also aligns well with the strap-based HRV Check that uses the same 0-100 scale.

If you compare your daily stress chart to Oura’s nightly HRV you’ll clearly see them moving in opposite directions: higher RMSDD values will equal less stress/rest in Garmin. At the end of the day, Daily Stress will give you roughly the same info, including onset of illness. You stress values will spike above normal levels.

And of course, a great thing about Daily Stress, HRV check and a newer Health Snapshot is that they are truly 24/7 metrics, not something you can only get at night.

Resting heart rate first thing in the morning on wakening has always been the easiest method of determining health/training status. Back in the day before these watches with OHR those who were interested took their resting heart rate manually. If it started showing a rise you could bet that you were likely to come down with some lurgy or other within a couple of days, or the increase indicated over training.
