HR accuracy issues - specifically XC Skate ski

I have the new Epix and took it out xc skiing.  The average hr was ~110 bpm on an outing I know I was pushing 180/190 the whole time.  I've done similar workouts in the past with an apple watch and I can feel my heart beating extremely fast.  I have fairly small wrists, but I'm really hoping to get the Epix to work because I can't go back to the Fenix screen after the Epix screen.  I'd really appreciate any hints or tips for correcting this because I really need it to be generally accurate and I presume it's going to have similar issues when I run.  I tried tightening it during the activity too and that didn't seem to help.  Thank you in advance!!!!

  • The obvious answer is to get a chest strap for all the reasons associated with optical heart rate.  These issues have been well documented and discussed ever since the first Garmin came out with optical heart rate.

  • Understood that a strap is better. But what are baseline expectations for a $1000 watch? Shouldn't it be able to be serviceable or at least close?  This was 100 bpm v 180/190 bpm.  That's what I'm trying to bridge.  I don't care if it's 5 bpm off in worst case scenarios.  But if it doesn't think I worked out and I'm spent, that's an issue.
