Golf Features - Swing tempo, tempo training, virtual caddie

Hi all,

It looks like the Epix 2 is missing several nice features from the Approach S62--swing tempo, tempo training, and  virtual caddie. I assume the specs are correct, but are there any golfers out there than can confirm the Epix 2 does not have these features?

It's a bit disappointing that the Epix 2 is missing these features from a watch that costs half the price and is several years old. I put in a feature request to have these added to the Fenix 6, but that did not happen.

Has anyone used Epix 2 for a round of golf yet? Curious if the auto-hole advance is better than on the Fenix 6. It generally worked well but could get off at times--I am guessing it may be because the GPS jumped around. Hoping the Epix 2 is better.

  • Doubt they ever will - if you want those in a Fenix format that is what the Golf Marq is for.

Garmin spec comparison shows what each type of watch has - at least the F7/E2 are now tournament legal:

However the interesting thing is the DC Rainmaker says that the F7/E2 has Tempo Training (Golf) - however can't see that in the manual so not sure he is right.

  • I‘m following this conversation as I‘m having the same question: is there a new version of the S62. If the Epix doesnt have swing tempo, it can‘t be describes as the 2022 golf watch. I‘m just not willing to pay 600 bugs for the S62, not knowing if theres an S63 next month.
there  ust be an acceleration sensor on the epix 2, as it measures the hand movements, no?

i javen‘t seen anything release on the PGA Show last week, hence I guess there‘s nothing new. Especially as chips aren‘t available in general and even the S62 is sold out in lots of shops.

I‘d be especially looking at the new and much better Display of the Epix 2.

  • Found Tempo Training as a Special App in the App list. I don’t do golf so I installed it and opened it just to see what it is for.

  • Yes, tempo not working on epix2 nor is the shot measurement.  I will give short measurement another try as that might be operator error but it doesn't appear to track like before.

  • Tempo training is a special activity app - it is in not in the golf app

shot distance is measured in the golf app but the data just appears on the screen measuring the distance from when you hit the ball to when you get to your new ball position.  This data doesn’t appear to be saved anywhere

  • would suggest watching this review of the Epix bieng used for golf as this reviewer had few to no issues: https://youtu.be/Q6w6OQ6bnxs

As others have stated no it doesn't have the very golf specific features of swing tempo, tempo training and virtual caddie; but at least they have added tournament legal option.

  • this is the tempo training app on the epix 2

  • Garmin has product ranges for specific categories. Instead of complaining what is missing, I am very happy that they include so much useful golf functionality in the epix gen2 from the approach category and improved the included features also using touch.

  • Seems like Garmin has software version 9.14/9.15 in beta testing phase that will support the Virtual Caddie and the Wind Direction feature.  Currently I do not own a Garmin Epix, but those 2 features are possible coming in the near feature.  If you are looking to have those features now, you can enroll in Garmin's testing program.  However, after speaking to the Garmin representative, she could not confirm that the swing tempo and tempo training feature was available on the Epix Gen 2.  I hope someone on this forum can confirm if it so on this watch.

  • The virtual caddie is great on Epix. They seem to be releasing more and more features as we go. Perhaps will get the swing tempo etc later on? I bought it primarily for running but v happy with it as a golf watch
