Multi-day trips

I am wondering if there's any new information regarding this issue.

I'm planning a long mountain traverse through the Alps, and I'll load the GPX onto my E3 for the whole trip. I am hoping to run a single activity for the trip (about 10 days), and "resume later" at the end of each day.

Is this a workable solution, or risky?

  • It is a workable solution.

Note that the whole activity will be logged on the day you started it. The other days will be empty. If you use resume later, sleep logging and maybe some other functions will not work.

I would instead log each day on its own depending on how you plan on doing the days. If you take a long break in the middle of the day it might even be natural to split the day in two parts.

What is risky about it is that the logged activity will be huge. There have been some reports that really long activities got issues in syncing. A route that long could reach the limit what the watch can handle and it might reduce the details of the route. It will take a really long time syncing that file. If something happens during the activity that makes the activity corrupt you might lose it all.

  • Thanks for the advice, I do as you suggest, then!

  • I would also suggest saving each day separately for peace of mind and for keeping the stats correct (day by day effort/recovery, etc.).

If at the end you want to have an activity comprising the whole length of the trip, you can always download the single .fit files and join them all with fitfiletools (online). The merged file can then be uploaded to Garmin/Strava or whatever other platform you may want to.

  • There's also this limitation, which could impair your ability to upload as one large file. Possibly requiring a 3rd-party tool, such as Fit File Repair Tool to reduce the file size.- File Size Limitation of Manual Uploads to Garmin Connect

When manually uploading a file containing multiple activities, or a very long individual activity, you may receive an error message preventing the file from uploading successfully.

The Garmin ConnectTm platform has a file size limit of 25 megabytes (MB) per file. There is also a limit of 99,999 total points per file.

NOTE: The 99,999 point limit will prevent activities that are longer than 27 hours in length when using the one second recording option on devices.
