New user: Cannot access apps from watch face using touchscreen...is this normal?

I don't know if this is a bug or an issue with my hardware because I just received my E3. The issue is that I can use the touchscreen and swipe up or down to get into my glances and then back out to the watch face. Then when I use the touchscreen to swipe left/right...and nothing happens. From what I can see, there is no possible way for me to get to my apps/activities/map by using the touchscreen when starting from the watch face. I can do it with the buttons but then why have a touchscreen if you cannot access the core functionality of this watch using it. I just prefer the touchscreen unless it is raining or I am running. Is this right? Surely I am missing something here.

That is correct. There might be some obscure way to start an activity through a widget, but just use the buttons.

A way might be to have a training plan active and use the coach widget to start an activity.

Touchscreen is pretty new in the advanced models. It is not the primary way of interacting with them. Touchscreen is for example by default turned off during activities.

Some apps have Glances, but not all of them. If they do, then you can add them the Glances, which allows you to access them via touch screen. OK got it. It seems a big miss to not be able to use the touchscreen to access primary functions but as touchscreen is quite new, hopefully they will add the touchscreen interactions to use all of the features of the watch, and not just the buttons.
