Enduro 3 restarts when trying to save 16h activity

Hello,

Last month I purchased an brand new Enduro 3. While training for an ultra I did record several hundreds km of trail running with it. All worked fine. I had the longest run about 8h. On the 7th Dec i had my ultra: Chiang Mai by UTMB 100k race. I finished in 16h. When on the finish line I saved the activity. After looking at my watch a few minutes later I saw that the "play" icon was on the screen as it is when starting. It started and took me directly to the stop activity screen where I could hit "save" again. I did save again and this time it worked. The activity also did not sync afterwards with garmin connect ( and thus not with strava ). I had to manually copy the activity file from the watch itself to my computer. I tried first to upload the activity file to garmin connect ( on the web from my laptop ) and that did not work saying that the activity already exists ( allthough it does not show up in GC or strava ). I uploaded the activity file on Strava and it worked  flawlessly.

I assume that this bug happens when the activity is longer that a number of hours which is grater than 8.

So what's up with that Garmin ?? It's a 900 EURO watch targeted at ultra endurance with battery lasting a long time but the "save" does not work ?? I don't even want to think to the scenario in which it lost my activity altogether... but certainly now I cannot trust it to record another ultra race with it. I realize(hope) this is a software bug, when will this get fixed ?

I had the latest firmware 12.22 when this happened.

  • I think you this  is just the automatic adjustment feature for bad GPS  tracks described bei Ray  Garmin Enduro 3 In-Depth Review: The Cheaper/Better Fenix 8? | DC Rainmaker

"Added new online processing of troubled GPS tracks, using internal watch sensor data to correct them"  This can last 12 hours until you see you activity (system settings, advanced, data recording, position optimization.

More described after "So that then gets to an even more fun question: How does Garmin’s new automatic track enhancement feature work?" in the linked article

  • Thanks for the reply. Ok, that would explain the fact that it did not show up in garmin connect right, that would not be such a big deal. But what about the restart on save ? That is much more worrying...

  • the same happened to me today. My Enduro 3 is 2 weeks old. The activity is on the watch but wont transfer to GC. I am really worried that this happen during an ultra!

  • Yes, this happened to me as well.  I had a 17 hour activity for an ultra that I DNFed and lost all my data which I was hoping to use to study how I could improve next time.

  • Hello. I am sorry to hear you are having this issue. The latest SW version 12.35 has been released. If you have not already, I would recommend installing this using Garmin Express. I would also recommend trying a hard reset. For this, hold the Light button until the watch shuts off, as opposed to selecting power off. Then power on again.

If this is still occurring, I would like to help investigate this further. For this, please feel free to reach out to me via Private Message.

  • Thanks Laurie - a few points, this happened on December 7th so I was using firmware version 12.22.  Also, I had the self-assessment enabled and the watch seemed to get stuck right after I did the self-assessment.  In so far as reproducibility, I don't do such long activities very often so that might be difficult.  For training I have completed up to 6-7 hours without any issue saving.

  • The restart on save sounds like a bug.
Luckily, Garmins happen to keep the data even upon restarts.

Conerning the "non syncing", from my experience with another Garmin watch, it sometimes happened that activites did not sync for no apparent reason.
An easy fix for me was to start and complete a new activity (also lasting just a few seconds): the old activity always got uploaded along with the new one my case.

Did you try this? (yes: it's not normal. But if it works, it's an easy fix)

  • What Marc Krawitz said about reproducing this si right and applies also for me. For 8h ( the longest I do in training) the "save" works. This is the problem, that is hard to reproduce as we don't do an 16h+ activity all the time. Maybe 2,3 times a year, but when we do it is important that the activity "save" works. In order to test this we would need a GNSS simulator which is too expensive for me. But Garmin should have one and maybe they can test the Enduro 3 for more than 16h and see if they get the same behavior. Or if you have other ideas for how we can test/tshoot further I will do it. I am an IT engineer so I think I could understand more technical requirements if needed. Let me know... I already have version 12.35 but with no way to test I don't know if the issue got fixed. Thanks

  • If the only issue is "time", I guess you could just "run" an activity during a normal working day with the autopause disabled, and keep it going during sleep.
You will eventually hit 16h+ so then you can try saving it.
As a test, I may also try this on a day where I don't do any real activity with the watch and see what happens :)

  • Yes. I thought about this also. I will do it as soon as I have a rest day. But obviously it does not reproduce the same conditions as you don't have movement so it only records a single point, and no navigation which would be also on during a ultra race. If the issue shows up at a test like this it would be great, but if it doesn't then it doesn't mean that its fixed, it may depend on other factors such as movement, navigation, etc... Thx
