GPS Accuracy

I did some running with Enduro 3 and fenix 7X Pro, finding the distance is always (very) different. Below are some typical examples.

I don't think this is acceptable especially when those running were done with a clear view of the sky without obstructions, using All System + Multi-band.

  • Are you using a chest strap HRM? Make sure the distance isn't coming from that. Do a run without the chest strap.

Save both activities as Course - that will reveal the true GPS distance. By default, Garmin watches use an algorithm mixing GPS and accelerometer data (either the internal accelerometer, or the one of an external sensor like the |HRM-Pro or Foot Pod). And if the accelerometer is not fully calibrated yet, or when the calibration went wrong, then the watch may report wrong distance (and pace), despite that the GPS track is all right, and the distance is correct when the activity is saved as course.

So if the distance on the activity saved as course is correct, then either make a few more runs under good GPS conditions, to complete the calibration, or reset the watch to factory defaults - that will force the calibration to start anew. If you use an external sensor (HRM-Pro or Foot Pod), then you can reset the calibration in its settings, without having to reset the watch.

And if it is really the GPS track that is wrong, then adjust the GPS options, using a more accurate setting, and also change the activity recording mode from "smart" to "every second".

  • Yes I am using HRM Pro Plus with Enduro 3, but I already set the distance from strap only for indoor use.

Anyway I will try some running without the strap.

The distance from the strap is (partially) used at outdoor runs anyway, even if set into the "indoor" mode. If the strap is properly calibrated, it improves the distance and pace calibration greatly. If the calibration is not completed, or was not done properly, then it can indeed influence the accuracy negatively. For example when you set the strap option to use the options Distance & Pace into the "always" mode, then it cannot calibrate itself with GPS.

To get it calibrated properly, reset the calibration, keep the option Indoor at Pace, as well as at Distance, and keep the option Auto-Calibration enabled. Do then couple of runs of some 3km or more, under good GPS conditions, in order to complete the calibration. Once done properly, it improves the accuracy of GPS tracks greatly, much better than with the watch standalone.

  • Has the distance from both watches started to match? Perhaps a firmware update has corrected this?
