I have set backlight on keys & touch and gesture on after sunset.
Gesture works as expected, but touching screen or pressing buttons do not activate backlight.

Hello tymmej
I am sorry to hear this is not responding as expected. Does this time conflict with your sleep schedule? If so, watch are your display settings for during Sleep Mode?
Hello, I am sorry to hear you are having this issue. I would like to help investigate this further. For this, I have reached out via Private message.

No sign of "after sunset" working at any time unfortunately Garmin-Laurie
Thank you for your quick reply. I have updated our engineers that this is still not working as expected…
Same issue
Every product release - Garmin how hard are you testing the software for bugs?
I completely agree, in fact I’m sending mine back today for a refund. I think I’m going to hold off using Garmin at the moment.

Thanks Garmin-Laurie hopefully they can find the issue and fix it soon
I found out the issue. There are TWO different places for backlight settings (WHAT THE HECK GARMIN)! So if you go into Settings: Watch Settings: Display and Brightness, that’s where most of us went to adjust our settings. It allows the backlight to to either be off or on all the time, gesture mode works after sunset, but it didn’t work for the keys. This is on the watch and the phone app. HOWEVER, there’s a hidden display menu. Go to your hot keys (now called SHORTCUTS) in the phone app and select DISPLAY SETTINGS for one of your hot keys. When you open that, it’s a menu completely different from the standard settings. I selected the backlight to after sunset for that and bam! Now it works. It shouldn’t have to be that difficult. But I think there are identical menu options for the display that don’t talk to each other. I hope this helps!
Excellent find! Works for me now.
Spoke too soon. For some odd reason this ‘work around’ only works for a short while and then it stops working.
I tried it on mine, making sure both the shortcut option and the original settings menu option were both set to "after sunset" for key press or screen touch.... sadly it's not working for me
Thanks for trying to help. Seems to work so far but it remains to be seen if my settings will be correct at sunrise/during daytime. I'll monitor this. Another worrying fault I have noticed though, is that when I have display settings set as a shortcut and press 'text size', the watch consistency crashes. Garmin, please fix.
UPDATE 24th Sept: It appears to be still working with the work around suggested above.
On shortcut I Have the settings under GENERAL USE - KEYS AND TOUCH as After Sunset. GESTURE is off.
On main settings DISPLAY & BRIGHTNESS, GESTURE is set as after sunset and Keys and Touch are set as on.
Yep. It resets once a day. Garmin needs to fix this.
Garmin should finally add backlight controlled by environment light: off when it's bright, 5% (or whatever the user sets) when it's dark.
"After sunset" setting is so lazy, I can be in dark rooms before sunset and in bright ones after.
