Do we think there will be a Pro version of the Mk3i released? The outdated hardware (Elevate 4 sensor) of the Mk3i really bugs me.

I am interested in a Mk3i which I would be intending to wear for some years (my Fenix 6 Pro is 5 years old now). However, it really bugs me that the Mk3i comes with older hardware in it, using a pervious generation optical HR sensor that did not integrate the latest developments in ECG and skin temperature. When keeping a watch for years, I don't want it to start with alreadys outdated important hardware like the optical sensor with missing features that are very important for health tracking (for example skin temperature is a reliable indicator of getting sick or when body temp is dropping too low).

As such do you think there will be an updated version of this watch mid-way through the cycle?

  • I want a dive computer that also tracks health and sleep

For me, I would like my watch do that, and the computer to do the diving part and then these will sync the data. Then I can have nice small watch and then for diving a big screen....

My original plan was to keep daily driving Forerunner 955, and keep this Descent Mk3i as dive only, but the AMOLED was just so nice, that have been daily driving this. But in ideal world I would have been happy with Forerunner 955 as daily driver (or some future Forerunner or Fenix) and then some huge display dive computer for diving that syncs the data with the watch and so on.

  • Thats fine that you want two separate devices, you do you! I want one device glued to my wrist the entire holiday that does everything I need it to do both in and out of the water.:)

  • Looking at the history of Descent releases the G Series would normally come out 6 to 12 months after an Mk.

I'm hoping for a Descent G2 or 3 based on the next Instinct 3.

Wish list is higher res MIPS screen, Solar, Maps, OHR v5 and AI.

  • G2 is almost certainly coming. The Garmin dive series product head said, with a big smile on his face and a smug tone "I can neither confirm or deny that" when he was asked if a G2 was coming. I wouldn't be surprised if we see it end of this year or Q1/Q2 next year.

  • It's an awful screen as a dive computer, in terms of size and visibility,  its a great rugged forever watch otherwise

  • Why is the screen awful for visibility?

  • Too small and dim, in sunlight screen is crystal clear, under water it's terrible which is a shame because otherwise it's a full featured dive computer basically all the functionality of descent absent ai, its clear they've just taken instinct production line and rather than retool and creat a bigger screen minus that irritating circle in top right corner, just crammed descent features, I'm sure g2 will have 51mm version but still not for me, if it had amazon eink paperwhite type contrast it would work but as is for diving not a fan

  • I am with you. Garmin may have good reasons for not implementing the latest HR sensor in the Descent MK3, but it’s annoying anyway as you expect all latest Garmin tethnologies being used in such an expensive watch/dive computer.

Also, what prevents me from considering the MK3 is the AMOLED display (which I don’t like although its brightness may be beneficial for underwater activities).

To answer your question: personally, I don not expect a ‘pro’ version of the MK3i considering the product history, although I would hope (despite expectations) Garmin will come out with:

    - MK3i pro or plus, with Elevate V5 HR, MIP Solar, and a bit lighter

    - a new Descent model (between Fenix 8 and MK3), 100m dive rating, MIP Solar,  Elevate V5 HR sensor, no subwave sonar technology and no mic-speaker (to reduce cost),

    fingers crossed.

  • Thanks for the post! I agree with everything you said except I think that any watch with dive capability intended to slot between the F8 and Mk3i should definitely have aair integration. Not only is it a useful extra for people to upgrade to later, but if Garmin actually want to sell those transmitters and increase adoption then they also need to work on models that do not cost £1600.

  • Why no subwave on mip solar version? I'd not be interested if it had a mic or speaker tbh
