Descent Mk3i tone and alarm volume

The volume of tone and alarm of my watch is very low. I had previously an Epix 2 and the volume was satisfactory. I bought a descendent Mk3i and the volume is so low I can barely hear it.

It could be acceptable for running or work out, however I found quite dangerous during diving, I cannot hear alarm in the water due to very low volume, and vibration for me is not enough.

Should  I bring the watch back and ask to change under warranty or it's a problem common to all Mk3i?

  • Alarms during scuba and freediving on my Mk3i are pathetically quiet and weak.  With a 5mm hood I almost never hear them.

If you agree, please open an enhancement request with Garmin and they may fix it by making them more configurable.

Currently, the $1500 Mk3i has alarms that are much less usable than many of the $200-$300 freediving watches.

  • Good idea. I went ahead and opened an enhancement request, so we'll see if that gets anywhere. I did call tech support and was transferred to a more specific tech guy very familiar with their dive watches. He confirmed there's nothing that can be adjusted for either the audio and haptics. Very unfortunate. I did suggest maybe the software can be updated so the user can at least adjust/set the haptics to different methods of signaling (a feature Shearwater has), such as multiple vibrational pulses, then a pause, then more vibrational pulses until the user manually turns it off. Of course a big issue is actually feeling the haptics through wetsuits.

Maybe the next model.... *sad trombone*.

  • Hello Garmin-Laurie,

    I previously had various Fenix's, FR965 and currently a Descent G1.
I just received an Mk3i and I noticed when pressing the lap button during a Strength session that I could hardly hear the tone.

I then turned on Key Tones, and pressing the buttons is extremely low in volume.

It's the same for alerts and alarms.

The only other watch I still have is the Descent G1, so I enabled Key Tones, and they are much louder, at least twice as loud, and I remember it was the same for the other watches I had previously.
I will make a video to show the the difference.

So is this a fault and thus I should log a case with Garmin, or is low tone volume normal for the Mk3i possibly due to its additional waterproofing ?

    Thanks,

  • I also complain with Garmin and they also asked to send video with sound, vibration, etc..

I checked with other owners of mk3i and the result is the same: sound and vibration are very very weak.

Worst part is during diving, you cannot hear the alarm (neither sound nor vibration).

I just wonder how did garmin got certification of this watch and why we paid so much for something that it's potential very dangerous during a diving.

I personally almost missed a NDL, thanks God my partner had a different watch and advise me.

I also wrote Garmin proposing to increase the time of the sound and/or vibration; no answer so far after months.

  • Here's a video in comparison to the Descent G1 which is definitely louder.
