The best Garmin ever?

Just getting acqainted with the Descent Mk3i! Has to be the best Garmin ever. Just has every feature for every outdoor activity, amazing. I'm putting my 7pro out to pasture . Was not a fan of AMOLED and sold my Epix 7 Gen 2. but this just works. Great watch, can't imagine what is next?

  • It is the possibility to disable the automatic start of dive mode. ... But Garmin has never responded to implement this…

Seems somewhat obvious why Garmin wouldn't implement this.

The extra dives are an inconvenience to you but not starting dive mode for real dives is much worse failure mode.

  • Well, “real divers” should check their equipment before diving. And even in Pool mode, the computer is surveying the dive, if the real divers would forget to turn off Pool mode when preparing for a dive. So no dangerous failure there… The inconvenience to set the computer to pool mode every single day is pretty annoying. (Even my old Oceanic has the possibility to turn off the automatic start of a dive mode…)

  • If it would start logging a dive when reaching 2m it would be ok. But 1,2m means that a dive is started every time you jump into the water for a swim…. which is not a small inconvenience.

  • That might be a better suggestion.

At least, it implicitly acknowledges that Garmin might have had a (somewhat) reasonable basis for what they did.

  • I dont know why solar is seen as a negative done properly it can add significant extra charge especially in sunny climes like dive spots, 15 minutes is enough to get a fix if your lost or send a distress message if you have inreach (which sadly isn't solar but should be for the same reasons), it's important for redundancy and independence of kit designed for use out of cell range

  • I'd rather have that real estate taken by an AMOLED display, that's why I prefer the Descent over the 7X. I have an Edge 1040 cycling computer that has much bigger solar panels, and if I ride late in the morning when the sun is up. On a 2 hour ride I gain at most 15 minutes of battery time. so solar is the one feature I am not a fan of?

I dont know why solar is seen as a negative done properly

The argument is that it can't be "done properly" (the watch is too small to have big-enough solar panels or would make the display smaller).

For the Edge 1040, it adds $150 (25%) to the cost and (somebody said above) was "done more properly" ("much bigger solar panels") and only gave 15 min of charge.

  • I dont know how big mk3 battery is but there's a video on YouTube of a fenix 7x solar charging that might help

Its marginal atm but its not a gimmick, its real benefit is trickle charge increasing battery longevity when it works.  Youd still need to carry a battery pack on hikes

A couple of years ago garmin was reported to have filed a patent for solar panel wires embedded in between oled pixels, that together with the recently reported blue oled light that is due to be roled out this year means that oled screens will require less power, reportedly 40% less, so solar will have more significance over time

is mk3 getting 30days? I know the mk2i was 600mah i was getting 16 days but even so if oled is getting more thats impressive in itself
