Descent Mk2i stuck in Descent screen

Since I had been having rapid battery draining issues (2% per hour) since the last 2 weeks, I had done a complete watch reset a few days back. The battery drain issue wasn't sorted, but at least I had the watch running fine. Today, I thought of trying to restart the watch and see if that helped sort the battery drain. Alas, after switching off, it wouldn't come on irrespective of any button that I pressed. I then connected the watch to the charger, and voila, the screen came on, but is stuck in the "DESCENT" boot up screen. Now, I can't switch off, I can't restart, nothing. However long I press the LIGHT button, the watch does not go off. Holding START/STOP and BACK for any amount of time does nothing. Holding both down along with LIGHT does nothing. Now I have no clue how to get this up and running again.

  • I'm still stuck in the DESCENT boot up screen since the past 24hrs. Anyone has suggestions? Holding the LIGHT button for any amount of time is not helping. Holding START/STOP and connecting to a PC over the original USB cable is not getting it recognized by the PC.

Among the Mk2 owners, am I the only one stuck with this problem? All other forums are buzzing with this issue, except this one. And the Garmin support page for this issue My Garmin Device Will Not Boot Past the Start Up Screen does not list the Mk2, though it lists the Mk3.

And unfortunately for me, the Garmin India support center refuses to touch an Mk2i saying it is banned in India purportedly because it has Inreach. Explaining to the them that the "i" is for Air Integration, and not for Inreach, has fallen on deaf ears.

  • Problem finally resolved. My battery ultimately died (24hrs from when the watch hung). I could then connect my watch to my computer (it took a bit of time for the battery level to come to a stage where the USB started to work); Garmin Express synched and updated some files; I then went into the watch's RemoteSW folder and deleted the files there. After disconnecting from the PC, the watch has booted up normally again. Thank goodness.

Just a word of caution. Avoid the full reset procedure (the sequence with the START, BACK and LIGHT buttons). Try to use the procedure here My Garmin Device Will Not Boot Past the Start Up Screen. I wish Garmin would include the Mk2 series on that page though. I'm think it was the Mk3 procedure that worked for me.
