Lower GF Low more conservative?

Are the Descent Mk2 conservatism settings labels accurate? For the Bühlmann ZHL-16C decompression algorithm it has the following preset gradient factor options.

Conservatism GF Low GF High
High 35 75
Medium 40 85
Low 45 95

The GF High values seem sensible, but are lower GF Low values really more "conservative"? A lower GF Low value will push the first deco stop deeper. But recent research indicates that actually increases the risk of DCS. So, I question whether a GF Low value of 35 is really more conservative than 45.

Gradient Factors in a Post-Deep Stops World - InDepth (gue.com)

For those of you doing mixed gas dives requiring significant deco, what gradient factors are you currently running?

  • So what I read about this subject, in theory yes, they are further from the 100, so they have more percentage of conservatism.

Then granted that science seems to say that GF-low should be >=55 and deep stops are not a preferred way anymore. Recreational diving the GF-low shouldn't even matter.

But can't say what GF those people are running, but as recreational diver after reading things<tm> I put mine to 70/80 for now. Would also be interesting to hear what others have put and why.

My why is mostly the things that I read that science says GF-low should be >=55 and risks of DCI gets higher if GF-high over 80. And then there was this: "According to Professor David Doolette, “Since about 2005, evidence has been accumulating from comparative decompression trials that show deep stops are not more efficient, and possibly less efficient, than shallow stops.” (Gradient Factors in a Post-Deep Stop World, May 2019). According to his article, Doolette selects 70/85 for his dives."., so went with 70/80.

But didn't like really loved the idea that I needed to read a lot of information about GF's to come up with this and understand somewhat what they mean and the being able to select one that fits me. Of course I could have just done with the factory options and be happy about it and not knowing at all what those mean, but maybe it's better to know.
