Update

I use my Garmin Descent MK2s after purchase in summer last year almost daily. I appreciate its versatility and multi-purpose functionality. However, after this time I realized that GPS accuracy really need to get enhanced. For a while, my regular 8.5 km runs (and I also did „measure“ it by mapping apps) will be recorded up to 250m lower with GPS+GLONASS and GPS+GALILEO. That has certain impact on calculate sport metrics. I also realised, that last update of FW occured 6 months ago. For such an expensive watch this rather low attention is disappointing, one may ask what the new models such as EPIX or Fenix 7 will experience. Dear Garmin, please rethink your engagement towards your top models.

  • I also notice that in run and hikes the Mk2i is consistently recording less distance than my Apple Watch S7 (I wear both on opposite wrists).

Regarding the second point, Garmin staffs used to reply to posts and answer questions on this forum, but I haven’t seen them in the past couple months, so I’m not sure if they are still working on updates or supporting this watch. It is likely that the sales for this watch has plateaued so they’ve already shifted focus. I’ve been waiting for those new sport profiles and I’m as saddened by this as you but there is nothing much we can do.

  • Agreed. I just want to mention that this is a young model (the MK2s came out June last year) and rather expensive. It‘s worth it but if it‘s already forgotten 6 months later, current users as well as potential buyers may ask why to invest in such expensive luxury such as the new EPIX 2 or Fenix 7, which are in a comparable price category, if these models are forgotten after sale. Apple is showing its support also for older models, proving potential new customers their support. Depending on Garmins future efforts in their support, at least me will rethink whether investing in the future into these admittantly luxury gadgets.

  • I too have some second thoughts for the Descent because of the same reasons, but I think for the Fenix series the support is quite good since it is a much more popular line. The number of sales won't be on a similar magnitude compared to the Descent. For the Fenix series there are a ton of blogger/YouTubers constantly reviewing them against the competitions and reporting every single update. The Descent series does not enjoy the same level of popularity, so it might be understandable that Garmin isn't investing a lot in updating it.

Well, in any case, next time I am looking to upgrade my dive computer I might just go for a dive-specific computer (maybe next-gen Teric?) and a regular sport watch (Epix or Fenix series). Garmin has not really listened to users' requests for more customizable dive screens or free diving data fields, and they haven't ported all the Fenix series updates over either. The update cadence has languished for over half a year. "The best of both worlds" has been their selling slogan for the Descent, but as it turns out it isn't the best in either world simply because they aren't putting the necessary manpower in the updates.

  • Yes. I am also very disappointed with Garmin's support. I'm already thinking of selling the MK2i and investing in a real dive computer like the Teric and buying another sports watch. I feel cheated by Garmin.

  • I have major GPS issues as well in the forest.  My phone and my Garmin 601 perform fine, but my running pace on my Mk2i drops by 4 minutes, indicating severe reduction in GPS reading.  Can we pair the watch with a Garmin 601, Bad Elf, or Garmin Glo for better GPS? for 1500$, I am extremely displeased that a 200$ GPS picks up better signal

  • GPS accuracy really is an issue. A known route of 8550 m is always measured 8000-8300, on average 300m too short, which has an impact on running metrics. Apple watch 6 or Suunto 9 peak measure almost exactly, close to 8500m. Funny thing is, the route plotted is rather precise on the track. So I guess, it must have something to do with algorithms calculating distance with GPS coordinates. When multiplying distance with a factor of about 1.034, distance is correct. Why Garmin doesn‘t get it right and deliver an update, is a miracle. But now they present a knew alround diving device, the descent G1, apparently based on instinct 2 platform. I guess a descent MK3 is probably around the corner. One may assume they don‘t trust their fenix 6 platform. This behavior is really customer ignorant!

  • I probably won't get the Mk3 seeing how much Mk2 lacked behind Fenix 6, but the G1 is a lower cost model based on the low cost Instinct 2. I would say they aren't the same things.

  • I consider the MK2i an excellent dive computer and smartwatch. However, in the future is much better to use the MK2 like a dive diving only and buy another model cheaper, like Fenix. I do not intend to buy the next generation of the MK because of the terrible support.

  • How do you think we Decent Mk1 users feel?  We got them off the ground in the diving sphere and are completely ignored.
