Diving activities in Fenix 7

Hello everybody

Wouldn't you like the Fenix 7 to have some possibility of diving activities?

I know that the Garmin Descent MK2 exists and I think it is a wonderful device, but I am not going to dive more than once or twice a year, and that if I am lucky.
So I can't justify the money to buy one.

So I think it would be a good opportunity to include the most basic functions of the Descent MK2's dive computer and put them in the Fenix 7 (we are talking about single gas dive and basic apnea).

I know this is possible, in fact, I used a Garmin IQ downloadable app for my Fenix 5s and it worked like a charm, just like my dedicated dive computer.

This would be a great reason to buy a Fenix 7.

  • First of all they will always want you to need more... That's marketing, so don't expect to have more than what you paid at the first place! Even if fenix can have it all, the only diving fenix you will see will be the MK3.

Now about the technical details... The descent uses different barometer and runs different checks on it.... Also it works 24/7 and measures the ambient pressure independently of the normal barometer and calculate the 16 tissues all the time... That costs in battery a lot, that's why the descent has less battery life than fenix series.  So do you really want to sacrifice so much battery for 2 dives per year??

Also fenix doesn't do everything and we know this... It has difference from tactix, aviator, quatix.

Now they put sailing at the descent because its a marine series as quatix, but probably they will not do it at the fenix 6 or the aviator... Also we dont expect aviator's apps to other series.  That's their marketing line and is ok

  • The Descent is a Fenix 7x without solar and touch screen so use it for everything. Solar adds nothing, you'll get melanoma before there is any appreciable charge and the screen size is reduced. Touch screen, while nice and cool is not a deal breaker for me.

  • No, the best descent that exist right now is a diving fenix 6x sapphire... Maybe the fenix 7 will be the base for the next descent (Mk3) but don't expect it too soon...

  • The Descent Mk2 is based on the Fenix 6X, not the 7X. Based on previous history, Garmin will probably release a Descent Mk3 based on the Fenix 7X in 2023.

Solar charging doesn't reduce screen size. The main solar panel on devices with solar charging is in the bezel; the actual display remains the same size. Solar charging does make the screen slightly dimmer because some of the light is being blocked by the secondary solar panel which is integrated into the watch crystal, so I'm skeptical whether that would be a good idea for a diving instrument intended for use in dim underwater conditions.

  • Probably yes and probably not.... I don't believe that Garmin will release an Mk3 before 2025 because that watch es have a different target group and there is nothing that a diver really needs more from a fenix 7 that he doesn't have from fenix 6... Also they gove a lot of updates to the Mk2 (they put even sailing make it a real marine watch like the Quatix)... And is far more better than it's competitors, so it's still selling.... Maybe the Mk3 will be based on a fenix 8 or more..!

  • You're damn right... Solar charge on a Descent don't add anything.

  • What is the name of the app please

  • A few people say that they wont trust equipment thats not designed for diving but we dont want a 100% accurate diving app as we just want to be able to record and see our dive afterwards. We still use the depth meter on the regulator. WE JUST WANT TO RECORD OUR DIVE.
