Descent G1 Update making the computer unusable

I recently installed the latest update for the Descent G1. After the update I'm seeing some pretty massive issues rendering the dive computer unusable.

The watch seemed fine until I took it out for the first dive since the update. As soon as I touched the water the depth gauge immediately jumped to 3500 feet and started sounding off alarms left and right. I assumed it just needed a surface pressure reset so I followed through the instructions to reset the surface pressure back to 0.

The issue still persists. The watch will randomly enter into dive mode without warning (days after having entered the water). Once its in dive mode the depth reading starts going crazy! It will jump from 0 to 20 feet in a matter of seconds then back to 0 again. I tried taking it for a dive to see it's readings under pressure and at about 30 feet actual depth it was reading 2 feet, then it would jump to 60 feet then back to 20 feet, then 0 feet.

Another weird one is the Temperature was reading over 150 degrees F.

The watch itself is quite new, I've used it on less than 10 dives with a depth no greater than 30 feet.

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?

  • Yeah mine is doing the same thing. I went diving with it two months ago, with no issues whatsoever. Just took it out on a dive yesterday and it started freaking out. The depth readings were completely wrong and the temperature was off the charts high.

I just restarted it today to see what was going on and the watch immediately started in dive mode, immediately gave me CNS toxicity warnings, and says I'm anywhere from 19m to 1.5m underwater, despite being on land. To make matters worse, you can't back out of the dive mode and go back to the main menu. I was able to successful 'reset' the surface pressure by powering it off using the LIGHT button, turning it on using the LIGHT button, and then holding MENU to engage the surface pressure reset. However, it only allowed me to go back to the main menu, where I did a total reset on the watch.

After the reset, I started a dive to see what would happen, and it went straight back into the dive mode where it said the temperature was 70 C and depth was anywhere from 1.5m to 19m, flashing CNS toxicity warnings, just overall unusable. I've tried about 20 different times to reset the surface pressure but the menu will not come up anymore, it just goes straight to dive mode when you power the watch on.

I have no idea what's going on, it's a huge bummer because the watch has otherwise been fantastic. I plan on reaching out to Garmin via the phone this week to see if they know how to fix it. Cheers
