Strap/Band Warning

TL;DR - Don't fit non-Quickfit straps/bands!

I'm not having much luck with my Descent G1 - first one had to be returned as there was what looked like a moulding defect in the bezel, though Garmin were very good about quickly replacing it.

So then, I thought about replacing the supplied strap with the non-Quickfit strap from my Instinct, as the contoured design of the Instinct strap makes the watch look better on narrower wrists, rather than just 'dropping-down' the sides of the wrist like the Quickfit ones do. So I removed the Quickfit strap, took out the pins, inserted them into the Index strap and fitted them back to the watch. Unfortunately, although the strap fits, when wearing it you end up with a terrible-looking gap between the strap and the watch as the different shape of the watch doesn't hold the strap flush against it.

Oh well, back to the Quickfit I thought. But no! Once you fit a rigid non-Quickfit strap, it's absolutely impossible to remove it! Unlike the Instincts when you can insert a pin from the outside of the lugs to release the strap pins, there are no such holes on the Descent. Unless you can squeeze the strap narrow enough to be able to compress the pins from the inside of the lugs, the only option is to cut the strap off.

Even when I accepted I'd need to destroy my Instinct strap to get it off the Descent, I didn't realise how difficult that was going to be, as the fastening point of the strap is reinforced with solid plastic inside, it's not just silicon.

  • Kind of a shame that Garmin closed the door on all non quickfit bands for their new watches. Also applies to Fenix 7 and Epix 2.

  • Didn't realise that about the Fenix and Epix too - and looking, it's the same on my MARQ too, no way to remove the pins from the outside. Frustratingly, the flush-fitting silicon strap from my MARQ won't fit the Descent either, despite also being Quickfit

  • Dude the actions you have done is everything that make you lose your warranty!

The G1 has more of the body of the fenix than an instinct. Just because you have a plastic bezel and a monochrome screen it doesn't mean that it has to fit instinct straps.

Garmin has made a lot of bad moves with the support of the Descent models, but for sure what you describe here is not something that we can blame them!!!

  • My point wasn't specific to the Instinct strap/band or any physical comparison to the Instinct, more the general point that you're limited to using QuickFit straps on this watch. Of course this is down to Garmin, they've made the design decision to make the pins inaccessible once a strap is fitted, something that they've seemingly done on a number of other recent watches, despite there being no physical benefit to doing this.

And changing a strap has nothing whatsoever to do with, or any impact on, warranty (except a claim relating specifically to the strap).

  • *You will void your warranty in case you will damage the pins!

As for the pins they are accessible with a special tool that watch mechanics have... This pin system is the mainstream at the watch industry... Personally I prefer the fenix 5 system with the screws on the sides which seems to be more robust, unfortunately but they decided to go back with the fenix 6 and fenix 7... G1 is not an exception because the watch case is based on a fenix and not on an instinct.

Of course they put the quickfit straps on the G1 solar models, but if you buy a non solar model you will see that the stock strap it's not a quickfit!

Of course you can remove it and place another quickfit on those watches but the choice they made with the stocks is the most unnecessary I have ever seen... it's a really downgrade in order to convince us to buy the solar, a choice that I would have done anyway because I have a lot of sun where I live!

But once again for Garmin to make such moves is at least pathetic!!!
