D2 Mach 1 Thoughts, Impressions & Experiences

I'm curious to know what everyone thinks of the new D2 Mach 1, based on the Epix (Gen 2) device. And for those that purchase it, I'd love to know  about your first impressions and experiences with it.

I know there have been some pain points this far, with battery drain and a couple of Connect IQ hiccups.

  • After a few days with my Mach 1 while I just sold my epix bought in February I can confirm that the battery life is not as impressive as on the epix but remains very decent for a smartwach and the 11 days advertised are possible (on my epix I was able to reach 16 Days).

Overall I am very happy even if I hope that with this new iteration, the software updates will be a little bit more frequent than it used to be on the previous D2s.

  • My thoughts are the same. I am getting about 8 days likely because of multiple GPS activities in between. My guess on the reduced battery life from the Epix is likely due to background updates for aviation weather/watch face. So far, it has been great.

  • Biggest gripe is when it fails. It could be very useful however it fails when needed most.
Depending on your panel (If you run steam gauges) the altitude, navigation, and SPO2 would be great.

The reached altitude feature would be great as a reminder that you stay on an altitude however it only alerts when you reach it and stops displaying the nav features.

The SPO2 has never worked in the air. I had a situation where a passenger was getting a headache, CO2 sensor had no indication, my SPO2 showed not available. I had the passenger put my watch on tight and remain still (as we started to descent) but could not get a reading…

Next night flight I wanted to monitor my SPO2 level not a single reading during 2 2hour legs. Wore the watch very tight, I do get readings during sleep and sometimes during the day, but never in the air. I will try the silicon band next time. It’s disappointing if I have to wear the silicon over the nice leather band.

Instructions also say you need to remain still good luck when it gets a bit bumpy in the air. Last couple flights have been as calm as it gets.

Funny thing my watch just drained from 4 days to 0 over night as I am writing it. It was on the watch face, maybe something ran in the background. Otherwise I get a solid week, going flying once or twice a week.

Now a few positives: weather forecasts presentation is better on the watch UI than on the garmin pilot app. Syncs nicely with Garmin pilot if you use it. Got a free trial, but it’s a far cry from ForeFlight.

The military uses the Fenix or Tactix line to monitor physiological metrics, the Mach 1 does that too and I like to review my condition during phases of flight and different altitudes (wish SPO2 worked) watching a visible heart rate rise during landing time is interesting. Nice physiological graph overlay on top of the flight data.

I would go for the tactix 7 but not sure what aviation features it has compared to the Mach 1. Besides the direct to.

  • Hi Do you know Fenix 7X GPS chip can record log at speed 900km/h+?

    Thank you

  • I'm very sorry to say that I'm for the moment deeply deceived by this quiet expensive smart watch

First of all I experience battery problems, discharge in one day without even using flight mode

The second biggest problem is the sleep mode. As pilot our lives are really not based on regular schedule. I had a ionic Fitbit before which was able to catch my sleep any time of the day. On the mach 1 you have to tell the watch what is your sleeping schedule.

And the last one is the support. I sent a mail to the french support about a bug in the translations only to improve their product. Their first answer was to contact the Garmin support of Belgium. Second answer was generic Thanks for email and if you need more support .... It looks that they don't read the messages.
